Fixture Focus - Spurs (30 Nov 2008)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton FC
For the third time this season, Spurs will be playing host to the Merseysiders this Sunday, though this time it's Everton, not Liverpool.
Moyes' boys are having an erratic form this season, with wins, draws and losses peppered quite evenly throughout the games played. And the Toffees have a quirk - they seem to win more away games than at home. We sure hope that this quirk will not happen at the Lane.
Spurs, fresh from their win against NEC on Thursday, will undoubtedly start their winning engine running again. And win we must, as up to this stage, the table standings still show some volatility. Spurs is 16th with 15 points, and Everton 7th with 19 points, and I think you are getting the picture....

Weekend Outlook (30 Nov 2008)

Manchester City vs Manchester United

"...ManCity, in my opinion, is a dud. Despite having shitloads of money from the Arab overlords, they are languishing in mid-table...."
- JayWalk, 29 Nov 2008

What Villarreal did really makes no sense. Shouldn't they be gunning for a win, on account of the home advantage? Instead, they went all defensive to squeeze for a boring goal-less draw.

Given that ManUtd's final game of the ECL Round 1 is at home to Aalborg i.e. unlikely for ManUtd to lose this or even draw this coming game, Villarreal, by their own stubborn insistence to eck a draw, sealed their fate to finish second in the group.

What that means is the prospect of an awful draw against the winner of the other groups which is sure to be overwhelming for Villarreal.

The way I see it, Villarreal's run ends at the next round.

Just a trivia here. Do you know that whenever ManUtd plays an ECL game in Round 1, the subsequent domestic fixture will be an away game? Don't believe? Check the fixtures! One of the chief complains by Fergie of the "fairness" of the fixtures.

JayWalk The Talk: ManCity side is relatively healthy with Robinho, Zabaleta and Fernandes all look likely to return to the starting line up.

Not so good for the ManUtd side as Scholes and Hargreaves are expected to continue to be absent. Neville with the groin injury is back in training but I doubt if Fergie will play him on Sunday. The biggest doubt remained is Berbatov who picked up a hamstring injury while representing Bulgaria a couple of weeks ago.

Although Berbatov is back in training, Fergie remained cautious however over his precious striker, as first time hamstring injuries tend to be a little more tricky.

JayWalk The Walk: City and United has been alternating wins over the years whenever they play at City's home ground. So if the trend were to persist, then we will have a ManUtd win this Sunday.

Bookies are making ManUtd give away a 0.5-ball handicap and predicts that at 1.925, ManUtd will win the game.

ManCity, in my opinion, is a dud. Despite having shitloads of money from the Arab overlords, they are languishing in mid-table. So what if they beat Chelsea to the signature of Robinho? Big whoop. One player does not make an entire team great.

And I hope they don't flatter themselves for the win over Arsenal, they were there at the right place at the right time to take advantage of a team in disarray then. Any other teams would be able to beat Arsenal then.

Go for ManUtd and give the 0.5-ball.

Disclaimer: The above views are purely my own two-cents' worth. In other words, I cannot and will not guarantee that my predictions are accurate. If you want to bet on the game, do so at your own risk. Also, please bet responsibly and within your means regardless of how "sure thing" that game may appear to be. Fixture Focus - Spurs (27 November 2008)

NEC Nijmegen vs Spurs (UEFA Cup, Group D)

On paper, this match looks like a walk in the park.  And that's why Spurs must be extra careful.

NEC has never won a major tournament and has only played European football 4 times in its history.  They do not have international stars in their lineup and lost their first group tie at Dinamo Zagreb.  But they do have a Spurs connection in a 22-year old midfielder named Lorenzo Davids, who is a close relative of former Spurs midfielder Edgar Davids.

Spurs performed superbly in their previous UEFA Cup tie and thrashed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 at home. But injuries to key players are not helping our already stretched squad.  King is probably rested and Modric and Hutton are injured.  Corluka is cup-tied which then limits our defensive options.  Dawson will probably start and perhaps Zokora or Gunter will also be part of the back four as we aim to keep a clean sheet away from home.  Let's also hope that "calamity Gomes" do not gift NEC any goals unnecessarily.  Upfront, Pavlyuchenko can't play and so it will be up to Bent to find the back of the net.  Coming away with a loss would be a disaster for our UEFA Cup campaign as we need to keep pace with group leaders Udinese.

Midweek Review (26 Nov 2008)

Villarreal vs Man Utd

"All Big 4 buang over the weekend."
-Gary, 26 Nov 2008

Surprise, surprise!! All Big 4 buang over the weekend. Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd were held to a scoreless draw again Fulham, Newcastle and Aston Villa respectively, whereas Arsenal lose to Man City. And Aston Villa finally stop the rot of losing to Man Utd everytime they met.

I wonder does taking a point in a Champions League match to qualified for the second round is so difficult meh? Last round, our group all held to draws. As of now, Villarreal and Man Utd are co-leaders of the group, leading by 6 points, with Aalborg and Celtic with 2 points each. The equation is very simple. Play the match to a goalless draw and we are through to the next round, regardless of the other fixture as goal difference counted as well. Celtic have to score a rugby scoreline in the next 2 fixtures to qualify. Slim chances.

With Villarreal in a slump of form in their domestic league, will Man Utd go for the kill instead of playing for a draw? Interestingly, they have met 4 times, and all ended in a draw. Man Utd away form is 8 wins in a row now.

Villarreal Team News: Joseba Llorente, Nihat Kahveci and Diego Godin are out with injuries.

Man Utd Team News: Dimitar Berbatov, Wes Brown, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves are out. Edwin van der Sar is rested for this match. Carlos Tevez and Darren Fletcher could feature in the match.

Odds and Analysis: Given a level ball handicap, and Man Utd is out to play for a draw, i think i will put my money elsewhere.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Weekend Outlook (21 Nov 2008)

Aston Villa vs Manchester United

"...Possession was an astonishing 68% which meant that we almost played monkey with them (Stoke City) for the entire 90 mins...."
- JayWalk, 21 Nov 2008

It was almost identical stats with that of the game against QPR but the scoreline this time round certainly is vastly different and if I may add, this 5-0 scoreline is more apt to reflect the stats.

Despite recent scalps, ManUtd has finally put these young punks in their place with a 5-0 thumping and zero shots-on-goal against us.

Possession was an astonishing 68% which meant that we almost played monkey with them for the entire 90 mins.

Looking ahead, we have the Villarreal game after this weekend and a point from the game will not only book us to the second round but also virtually reserved the top spot under our names. Granted that a win would be even better and rendering the last game against Aalborg meaningless, once perhaps have to aim a little bit more realistically.

JayWalk The Talk: The sickbay is going to be quite full this weekend as we have Brown, Scholes, Berbatov, Rooney, Ferdinand, Hargreaves and Fletcher reporting sick of various seriousness.

Tevez and Ronaldo will be partnered up front with Carrick, Nani and Anderson taking the midfield. I won't be surprised if Giggs gets a call up to put on the Captain's armband.

Not much problem on the Villa side, perhaps except Bouma.

JayWalk The Walk: If tradition is anything to go by, then perhaps the punt will be on ManUtd who has won at Villa Park for the last 11 consecutive times? We are possibly Aston Villa's bogey team. Aston Villa is the only team in the EPL to have lost and conceded the most goals to us.

Surprisingly, bookies are making ManUtd give up a mere 0.5-ball handicap at a relatively modest 1.85 decimal odds to beat it.

Perhaps the confidence was discounted by the growing numbers of casualties in the ManUtd sickbay and right at the time when Villa's players are returing from injuries.

I think at 0.5-ball is worth a punt as I do not foresee the jinx hoodoo being broken anytime soon.

Fixture Focus - 23 Nov 2008 (Spurs)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Blackburn Rovers FC

A potential leap to the 11th/12th place of the table last weekend was not achieved after our defeat against Fulham, and we are now back in the bottom three. On the bright side, however, the positions between 12th and 18th still looked tenuous as only just 1 point separates them.

Spurs would be hosting Blackburn, currently on 18th and 1 place above us. Like us, they would be trying to climb higher up the table before the Christmas Crunch, and I believe that they would be playing this game all out. So far undefeated at home since Ramos left, Spurs would be one-up in this fixture.

A win in this game will definitely lift us out of the bottom 3 by the end of this fixture weekend.

Whoa! We were so closed to a Perfect 10 this weekend as Cool402 was off with his prediction of the Bolton-Liverpool game. What a waste!

Still, it was a good enough performance to jump up to joint 6th spot.

In general, I think most folks did well as indicated with a bumper crop of 7 people getting onto the Marksmen Board.

Well done, guys!

Weekend Outlook (14 Nov 2008)

Manchester United vs Stoke City

"...If we were to lose today, Fergie is sure going to do more than just a flying shoe. And this time, he won't miss...."
- JayWalk, 14 Nov 2008

It wasn't a pretty scoreline at mid-week but it was a win nevertheless and a ticket to the Carling Cup quarter-finals.

At 12 shots on-goal versus none, I am sure Fergie won't be too happy with just a 1-0 win.

The B-team still have a lot of work ahead of them and in a way, it is good that we advance to the next round as it means yet another game for us to try the youngsters.

Looking ahead, there will not be a mid-week game although it would have been good for us to convert the game in-hand and catch up with the rest of the league while we are still relatively free. Better now than later where we will be further into the later and more critical stages of the cups and leagues.

JayWalk The Talk: Hargreaves is out for the rest of the season and it made me wonder if we bought another Alan Smith? van dar Sar will definitely be back between the sticks. He has been awful in his past few games and we really need to get him more games to shake off that hoodoo. In the mean time, Fergie better start looking for a replacement goalie.

Ferdinand, the only player in ManUtd to have played every single minute this season, will be partnering Vidic. These two used to be the invincible duo and yet were tossed aside like garbage by the Arsenal attack last week. What happened? Evra will also have a place in the back 4 but Brown is still out injured which means Neville and da Silva will be fighting for the last remaining spot.

Ronaldo will be seeking his 100th ManUtd goal today and so do expect the young lad to appear on the score sheet. Scholes is about 4 weeks away from full recovery (Happy Birthday! 16 Nov) while I wonder if Nani will get a birthday start (17 Nov) in midfield ahead of Carrick, Fletcher and Anderson.

Rooney is fighting off a chest infection and so I expect Tevez, who will be starting from the bench, to replace him up front with Berbatov later into the game.

As for Stoke side, Sidebe is doubtful and it could really throw the proverbial spanner into the goal scoring department. Other than that, Stoke doesn't really have a manpower shortage problem. Perhaps their physical play made them all super fit? Haha.

JayWalk The Walk: The last time these two teams met in the League was 1985 where the Premier League was known as the First Division. It was a home game where we whipped them 5-0. Does Jesper Olsen (2 goals), Mark Hughes (2 goals) and Norman Whiteside (1 goal) ring a bell? Stoke were relegated shortly after but not before beating us 2-1 earlier in the season (1984) on their home soil.

However, we would have to date even further to 1976 where Stoke last won at Old Trafford.

Coming back to the present day. Stoke's return to the top flight has been relatively good, having scalped Arsenal 2-1 two weeks ago and pinned Liverpool down to a goaless draw in September. It is not that Stoke City are that good to be able to face up to (and even beat) the Big 4, it is rather that Arsenal and Liverpool didn't show their opponent enough respect. Underestimate your opponents and it will come back and bite you in the ass.

We learned our lesson recently with Hull City where we narrowly escaped with a 4-3 win and paid dearly with a 1-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium against an understrength (or so we thought) Arsenal.

If we were to lose today, Fergie is sure going to do more than just a flying shoe. And this time, he won't miss.

We won't lose today or so said the bookies who are offering 1.975 decimal odds for ManUtd to beat the 2.25-ball handicap. Problem is that the rest of us aren't so optimistic. Without a doubt, we will win this game at home but we aren't so sure that we can pull off a 3-goal margin victory and it's all because the standard of our defense is a little suspect of late. In other words, if Stoke City sneaks in 1 goal, we have to bloody hell reply with 4 just to win the handicap.

Too much work for too little money.

Wager pot says only 63% are buying ManUtd to win the handicap. Not very confident now, are we?

Disclaimer: The above views are purely my own two-cents' worth. In other words, I cannot and will not guarantee that my predictions are accurate. If you want to bet on the game, do so at your own risk. Also, please bet responsibly and within your means regardless of how "sure thing" that game may appear to be. Fixture Focus - Spurs (15 November 2008)

 Fulham vs Spurs

In all 3 visits to Craven Cottage (for both league and cup ties) in 2007, Spurs have only won once and drew twice.  So what can be expected in 2008?

This season's Fulham includes a potent striker, Andy Johnson, in their lineup.  Together with ex-Spurs Bobby Zamora, and midfield maestro Jimmy Bullard, these 3 players will be depended upon to break up the wonderful momemtum of high-flying Spurs.

Everyone would have noticed the resurgent Spurs in the past few weeks, who have been nothing short of spectacular.  Goals seem to have come freely from all our strikers.  An interesting pattern has emerged which is worth mentioning.  In Redknapp's first 6 games in charge, Spurs have scored 2 (Bolton), 4 (Arsenal), 2 (Liverpool), 4 (Dinamo Zagreb), 2 (Man City), and 4 (Liverpool) goals respectively.  So if this pattern continues, Spurs have to keep Fulham to 1 goal or less to ensure the 3 points.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (12 Nov 2008)

 Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool

The second meeting in less than 2 weeks and within the same fixture setting, Spurs is playing host to the Reds from Merseyside this Wednesday for the Carling Cup fixture. After our outstanding performance against them on 1 Nov 2008, would this be a redux?

However, the Liverpool we are facing may not be the same squad that we faced back in our victory 12 days ago. As with Manchester United and the-team-which-shall-not-be-named (i.e. ArseNAL), they may field a second string side to go through the motion, with the Champions League and maintaining their chase for the top league position being their better priorities.

Spurs, however, would be defending this cup, in the name of professionalism. After all, we beat the Chelsea first team to get the cup in the last season, and it was the break in our silverware drought.

I would say we bring on our first team, and maybe one of two of our talented youngsters, and play the game.

We shall defend the Carling Cup.

Midweek Review (11 Nov 2008)

Manchester United vs Queen Park Rangers

"Arsenal's victory made it sweeter for them as the team that played over the weekend is considered 2nd team."
-Gary, 11 Nov 2008

Arsenal's victory made it sweeter for them as the team that played over the weekend is considered 2nd team. Look at the injuries they have, and you have no choice but to give them the credit when the tough get going.

Tonight's game will see our own 2nd team in action against QPR. Rodrigo Possebon will be feature after having a scare in last round against Middlesbrough.

We also have Johnny Evans, Darron Gibson, Manucho, Danny Welbeck, Darren Fletcher, Nani, Anderson and Tomas Kuszczak for tonight's game.

Rafael is doing so well in recent games like Celtic and Arsenal that he is poised to take over the right back spot permanently from Gary Neville and Wes Brown. Oh, in case you forgot, Wes Brown have not feature since letting in a goal against Liverpool.

Man Utd Team News: Need i say anymore? Fergie is putting the entire 2nd team for this match.

QPR Team News: Gavin Mahon, Patrick Agyemong and Daniel Parejo will be feature in the match. Mikele Leigertwood is suspended. Rowan Vine is out with a broken leg.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 ball which i think is hard to achieve, given the nature of 2nd team of not having match fitness and lack of sharpness in front of goal. Stay away.

Results - Games 08 - 09 Nov 2008 EPL Prediction League 2008/2009

Well done to everton for being the only 6 pointer this weekend to climb up to 4th.

We have 4 guys (including myself) on the Marksmen Board.

All thanks to Fulham's win, I was able to leap frogged 3 places and get back up the table in 7th place.

No change at the top 2 but ianrush has made a rush to coming fiercely at 3rd. Well done!

Weekend Outlook (08 Nov 2008)

Arsenal vs Manchester United

"...so as to secure the top of the table (ECL) in order to get a favourable draw in the second round. Trust me, it is the other teams who would be praying to avoid us rather than the other way round. We have the mettle to not only play any team in the ECL, but also to beat them...."
- JayWalk, 08 Nov 2008

A win was all we needed in the mid-week game again Celtic to ensure our qualification to the second round of the ECL. Instead we ended up with a draw and a measly solitary point.

Granted that we are not mathematically qualified yet as both Villarreal and us are 6 points ahead of Celtic and Aalborg with 2 games left, I am sure that ManUtd's far superior goal difference should ensure our safety, even if we lose the remaining 2 games.

Still, it would have been more comforting to qualify on our own terms rather than having to depend in the mercies of other teams' fate.

Some may say that we need to continue to push forward in the remaining 2 games so as to secure the top of the table in order to get a favourable draw in the second round. Trust me, it is the other teams who would be praying to avoid us rather than the other way round. We have the mettle to not only play any team in the ECL, but also to beat them. We even have the ECL trophy to show for it too. When it comes to a club of our calibre, I won't exactly be too worried how our draw turn out. The only advantage of a favourable draw is that it gives us ample time for rest in between juggling this with our domestic fixtures.

Take this Celtic game in hand. Do not fret over our dismal result where we needed good ol' Giggs to bail us out. We didn't give our 100% as we rested Evra, van dar Sar, Berbatov and Rooney. The stats of 73% possession and 30 shots attempted vs 6 on the Celtic side was a tad more flattering than it should be.

Obviously Fergie thinks, and I agree, that this Celtic game isn't really important and that we can afford to throw it to prepare for the subsequent game against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Looking ahead, we have a Carling Cup game at Old Trafford against Queen's Park Rangers which is going to be yet another cakewalk and it is one of those games where you see a totally new squad of fresh faces taking to the pitch as we rest our senior players. If you ask me, there is no downside to getting eliminated from the Carling Cup. The only upside is that we get more games for the B-teams to take to the fields.

Once the QPR game is settled, our rested boys will be again at Old Trafford to host Stoke City, which will be yet another easy 3 points to pick up before travelling to Villarreal, fully prepared the mid-week after.

JayWalk The Talk: There is only two words to describe the current squad list of Arsenal at the moment.

Deep shit.

Captain Gallas is currently serving as the Sick Bay Monitor overseeing his charges of messrs Walcott, Adebayor, Sagno, Eboue, Eduardo, Silvestre and Rosicky. van Persie has a 3-match suspension to serve over his foolish direct red-card shoulder charge into Stoke's goalie Sorensen last week.

Over at ManUtd, we only have Hargreaves, Scholes and Brown to deal with and we have enough players in the squad to amply cover their absence.

JayWalk The Walk: Conservative punters are all predicting a draw here but I think the odds favour ManUtd a bit more than people think. Visitors ManUtd are made to give a 0.25-ball handicap and a slightly more favourable decimal odds of 1.925 to beat it. Punters' pot is slightly skewed towards ManUtd with 53% of the wagers on ManUtd to beat the handicap.

The 1X2 odds are 3.20, 3.17 and 2.25 i.e. between a win, a draw and a loss for Arsenal, the chances of a home win outcome is actually the lowest i.e. the sports odds analysts do not think Arsenal can win at all.

Let me explain why.

Arsenal has a very critical weakness that has yet to be resolved resulting in points dropped against the most unlikely of teams.

The weakness?

The lack of height in defence. Gone are the days where you have Tony Adams or Patrick Viera in the 6-yard box to intercept the crosses. It seems like Arsenal has a lot of trouble dealing with aerial attacks. They are like the Liverpool during the David "Calamity" James days.

The only lanky bloke is Adebayor but on a normal day, the striker is known to be lazy to pull back and help out in the defence and so you can't really count on him to deal with the crosses. And besides, both van Persie and himself will not be available today anyway.

Previews at the various football websites are singling out Wayne Rooney as the player to watch today.

I disagree.

I say look out for Ronaldo, Ferdinand and Fletcher as we will win this game with our heads.

Another factor counting against the Gunners is the relatively inexperience of the squad. Without the leadership of Captain Gallas on the field today, the youngsters looked like slaughter fodder for the Red Devils. My only worry is for them to get too emotional and start flying tackles all over the place resulting in severe injuries on our players and thus jeopardising our squad availabilities for subsequent matches.

History-wise, Arsenal has only won us once in our last 5 head-to-heads at home and so I say go ahead, take ManUtd and give the 0.25-ball handicap.

As the old saying goes, "The Ball Is Round". Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (9 Nov 2008)

Manchester City FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

Both Spurs and Manchester City have scored well in their respective UEFA Cup fixtures on Thursday. With this high form, they will meet each other in the City of Manchester Stadium.

After wins by Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, Spurs are now rock bottom again.
For now, Manchester City is a stone - either a stepping stone or a weighing stone - for us in the league table.

Spurs would have to watch out for the wonder boy Robinho, who had terrorised City's opponents in the past few games, but with Pavlyuchenko rested and Bent on a high, the Spurs strike team could make City run for their money, even if it is an away game.

So let us sit down and enjoy the game. And look forward to Harry Potter/Houdini/Redknapp having more tricks up his sleeves.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (7 November 2008)

Spurs vs Dinamo Zagreb (UEFA Cup, Group D)

Clash of the Croatians!

Croatian League leaders Dinamo Zagreb pay a visit to White Hart Lane this week for our 2nd group match in the UEFA Cup.  After losing to Udinese in the first match, Spurs needs to get 3 points from this home tie and we will be relying heavily on the player intell that Luka Modric provides on his former teammates.

The visitors are now helmed by Mario Manzukic, a 22 year old Croatian international striker and Pedro Morales, a 23 year old Chilean attacking midfielder assuming the role that Modric had in the team.

Redknapp again has limited choices for striking options and will probably have to start Bent alone up front.  Modric will relish showing his former team a lesson or two and Redknapp's tactics will take full advantage of this dimunitive midfielder.  Corluka is also cup-tied so I am hopeful that Hutton is ready to go and King is also available if his knees can take the punishment.

COYS!!!

Midweek Review (5 Nov 2008)

Celtic vs Manchester United

"Man Utd just need one more point to qualify due to goal difference, even if they lose the next 3 games.
-Gary, 05 Nov 2008

Aiyo, Man Utd show too much respect to Hull City already. 4-1 up and Man Utd players' heads start to inflate. In the end, they are very lucky to nick a win.

Now we are back to Champions League action with 3 games to go. 7 points and sharing the other qualification spot to the next round is Villarreal. Celtic has only a solitary point and Aalborg did well to hold Celtic to a draw in the first game. Still cannot say "technically qualified to the next round"?

You may say im arrogant in my review. But Man Utd just need one more point to qualify due to goal difference, even if they lose the next 3 games. Aalborg still need to visit Old Trafford. Man Utd home form is still unbeaten. Celtic have not open their account in this season Champions League.

I have a feeling Fergie might opt for a 2nd team as he wants to inflict more damages to Arsenal this coming weekend.

Celtic Team News: Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras are out.

Man Utd Team News: Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar will be rested. Ben Foster or Tomasz Kuszczak will be featured tonight.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap at 1.9. There is chances you could win half or full stake. Go for it.

Results - Games 01 - 02 Nov 2008 EPL Prediction League 2008/2009

Looks like everybody got floored by the Bolton scalp over ManCity despite the latter better players in the likes of Robihno.

This season turns out to be more interesting than previous for the unseemingly weaker teams seems to give the bigger clubs a run for the money. Who would have thought Stoke City could beat Arsenal or that Hull City could actually put 3 goals into the ManUtd net at Old Trafford?

So anyway, congrats to weimeng and hotdog for adding one more game to their respective tally in the Marksmen Board. Well done!

On to the next weekend then!
