Fixture Focus - Spurs (1 Jan 2011)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham FC
Happy New Year to all of you!
And with it, we are now entering the second half of the season. Spurs is sitting comfortably at 5th and away from the chasing pack led by Bolton and Sunderland with 4 points difference (and a game in hand).
We are playing hosts to our across-the-capital neighbours Fulham on New Year's Day. Spurs would be without suspended Kaboul and Defoe, which means Bassong and either Crouch or Pavlyuchenko would be replacing them respectively. Other than that, the lineup would likely be similar to the one that defeated Newcastle during the midweek.
Fulham, after securing an away win at Stoke, would be coming to "Fortress Lane" optimistically and hoping for a coup. Hughes likely would field the same side that won at the Britannia.
If Spurs wins this, we would be 7 points away from 6th and be in contention for the top 4 positions with the 2 Manchester teams, Chelsea and the Gooners.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 28 December 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United

The win at Villa Park was exhilarating considering that we only had 10 men! Yet, we face another fixture in a space of 2 days and we will need to focus on the task at hand.

Newcastle has had interesting 3-1 scoreline games recently.  They lost 3-1 to West Brom, won 3-1 against Liverpool, and lost 3-1 to Manchester City.  All eyes will be on Andy Carroll as he will cause problems for our central defenders.  And all Yiddos can only wonder if Sol “judas” Campbell will get to take the field for the barcodes.

On paper, Spurs are the stronger team and the midfield attacking foursome of Bale, Modric, Lennon and van der Vaart can terrorize any team.  The problem we have today is who to play upfront as Defoe serves his suspension for the red card he received on Boxing Day.  My thinking is that Crouch will get to be upfront as the lone striker with van der Vaart sitting between him and the marauding midfield.

We must continue our good form and string of 9 games without defeat to keep up with the league leaders.  COYS!!!

Midweek Review - 28 Dec 2010

Birmingham City vs Manchester United

Now is the festive season where matches are play 48hours after the first is play. Now you know why England is complaining that there is no winter break whenever there is a major competition like World Cup or European Championships, as players need time to rest. 9 months without rest in between is not something that human can cope or comprehend.

We are now 2 points leading the table with Man City behind. But they play 2 games more, so that is the least of my worries. The main challengers will still be Chelsea and Arsenal. They have 1 game in hand and we have 2 games in hand.

Birmingham in relegation fight with Wolves, Wigan, West Ham and Fulham? Well, the table doesnt lie and Birmingham are hovering around the line.

Birmingham Team News: Alexander Hleb and James McFadden are out.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Antonio Valencia, Paul Scholes and John O'Shea are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1 ball. Avoid Man Utd as they aim for points than going for goals now.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 26 December 2010)

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur

Merry Christmas and hope your holiday weekend has been fun.

Man, do I miss football! After the snowed out weekend last week, I am so excited for Boxing Day football again.  This time, we travel to Villa Park for a tricky away tie.  A hard-fought win over West Bromwich Albion last time out helped alleviate some of the pressure on manager Gerard Houllier but did not offer many signs that Aston Villa can get back to the level they were at last season anytime soon.  One thing Villa can't be accused of this season is sitting back and trying to soak up the pressure when the big teams come to town. The 2-2 draw against Manchester United and the 4-2 defeat to Arsenal are testament to that. In fact Vila have scored more home goals than any other team in the bottom half of the table.

As for Spurs, Gallas is out but we do have Rafael van der Vaart, Jermaine Jenas, Younes Kaboul and Niko Kranjcar available again. Spurs are now unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions and haven't lost against Villa in the last four meetings making them a daunting prospect for a team struggling at the wrong end of the table.

We must continue our good form and keep up with the leaders.  COYS!!!

Weekend Review - 26 Dec 2010

Manchester United vs Sunderland

2 weeks of no soccer due to bad weather, but we have so much to tell. We got Marseille in the 2nd round for Champions Cup. Rafa Benitez got sack by Inter Milan 6 months into the job after winning the World Club Cup. Russia and Qatar are given the rights to host 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively, I know, sound abit too late.

Besides Chris Hughton, Sam Allardyce also got sacked by Blackburn Rovers.

Anyway, we are 2 points in front and 2 games in hand with Blackpool and Chelsea. I will take it that the loss in League Cup was a blessing in disguise as the Premier League are facing fixtures congestion due to bad weather.

Today game against Sunderland is our first game in nearly 2 weeks. That is really a winter break for Man Utd and it will definitely help them in the title chase. Same goes for Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Paul Scholes and John O'shea are out

Sunderland Team News: Lee Cattermole, John Mensah, Anton Ferdinand, Michael Turner, Titus Bramble, Matthew Kilgallon, Trevor Carson, Andy Ried and Frazier Campbell are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap. Take Man Utd for the win and the handicap.

Results - Game 11 - 12 Dec 2010 EPL Prediction League 2010/2011

Not much happening this week as everybody stumbled on the Stoke-Blackpool game.

Personally, if not for the Monday kick-off, I would have picked the ManUtd-Arsenal game for our second game. Still, it was quite the good pick to have the Spurs-Chelsea game which proved just as tricky to predict.

Congrats to cool402, weimeng and Everton for being the only ones to pick up 3 points.

Weekend Review - 13 Dec 2010

Manchester United vs Arsenal

"..we can go forth and claim both London teams in a week."
- Gary, 13 Dec 2010

The draw was what we wanted and we shall know who will be our 2nd round opponents in this coming Friday draw. Inter Milan, AC Milan, Lyon, Roma, Copenhagen and Marseille are the teams that we are more likely to face in 2011.

The coming fixture is good for both teams as they have extra day of rest and with no other fixtures in the week, we can go forth and claim both London teams in a week.

English Football Association are one weird lot of organisation. Not able to host World Cup 2018, they say they got backstab for promises by the committee that they will vote for England. Ouch. Now, Newcastle sack Chris Hughton for no apparent reason and mind you, Newcastle is not West Ham or Portsmouth. They aint at the bottom of the Premier League but bad boardroom management that have no intention of running the club, with the only intention to sell the club with a profit.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia are out.

Arsenal Team News: Kieran Gibbs, Johan Djourou, Cesc Fabregas, Abou Diaby, Thomas Vermaelen are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd give 0.5 ball handicap. Even though Man Utd home form is unbeaten, I doubt they will crave out a win. Avoid this.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (12 Dec 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea FC

Both teams topped their respective groups and had qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League. With no European games until February of next year, it is time to concentrate on the domestic league, for both teams.

For this post, I shall begin with our opponents, rather than ourselves, first.

Chelsea has been so far without a league win since their loss to Sunderland back in early November. Ancelotti is feeling the heat, and so are the other players, as they see their lead on the league table slipped. Key things are Terry is back and ready and had played the Marseille game back in the midweek, and also Lampard may return at least to the bench. Facing our leaky defence would be their usual Drogba-Anelka-Kalou combo, but they had been facing a score drought themselves.

Spurs would be welcoming their west London neighbours without Van der Vaart, Jenas and Krancjar in the reception committee, but Modric would be back after recovering from a bout of flu. Likely starters would be Gomes, Gallas, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto, Hutton, Bale, Lennon, Modric, Palacios, Crouch and Pavlyuchenko/Defoe, with Dawson and Sandro probably at the bench.

Although we are away from the chasing pack from the teams 6th and below, this is a must win in order for us for stay at the momentum, and to catch up with the leading pack in the 1st to 4th positions. However, Chelsea, in the meantime, needed to "break the duck" and would go all out in reminding others that they are last season's EPL champions and still capable of being the one for this.

But one thing's for sure, Chelsea is coming to White Hart Lane, where even the European champions had fell.

Take a guess for the outcome. ;)

Midweek Outlook (07 Dec 2010)

   Manchester United vs Valencia

Remember when I said I am always reminded of 3 things whenever West Ham comes to mind? Well, after the 4-0 drubbing, make that 4 from now on. @#$%$%@!

Still, there is no need to push the panic button yet as it was a make-shift squad of 10 changes. Fergie wasn't too concerned about the loss. We never thought much of the League Cup to begin with anyway.

And West Ham paid for the price thereafter slumping to a 0-1 defeat to Sunderland to remain rooted to the bottom of the table. How smart was that?

Grant, in my opinion, is not a smart manager. Perhaps that's why he did not last long at Chelsea either. I am not saying that by giving up on the League Cup game against ManUtd, a win against Sunderland would be guaranteed but at the very least with the players better rested (Grant made only 2 changes), they would at least stood a better chance?

It was a narrow win for Sunderland which translate to a narrow loss for West Ham, I am sure fixture fatigue was quite a big factor contributing to this defeat.

Speaking of rest, ManUtd will indeed be well rested after the game against Blackpool was postponed due to frozen pitch. Granted Arsenal has taken over us in the table, we do however have a game in hand which we may not even need to cash out should we defeat the Gunners come the following Monday.

Oh did I mention that we are playing Chelsea the Sunday after that?

Rest! Dammit!! The squad needs rest!!

If we can pull off both wins, I think we can start dreaming about the title even before Christmas. Oh how the tides has change where just a couple of months ago, I was lamenting how our season was over with a spate of draws here, there and everywhere.

Looking at today's game. We may have already qualified to the next round but a defeat today is unthinkable as it would allowed Valencia to top out the group. The implication would be that we will be meeting the winners of the other groups in the next group. There are no surprises this season as powerhouses like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are all expected to finish their respective groups on top.

The only worry is the prospect of encountering Inter Milan. Still, that may not happen as Inter Milan is only in second place because of goal difference. This final game of the round may just turn the tables in favour of Inter Milan.

In any case, finishing at the top of the table would be the wiser decision to make for this year.

Still, the mentality of Valencia coming into this game plays a large part also. They are not doing very well of late, slumping to a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, chalking only 4 wins in their last 10 games.

Do they want to go easy on tonight's game and just settle for second, thus allowing them to prepare for the next game hosting Osasuna or will they be gunning for the top spot?

ManUtd will have it easier today as they have home ground advantage and needing only a draw to secure pole position.

Valencia receives a 0.75-ball handicap from ManUtd and bookies feel that the advantage is in favour of the visitors and thus giving Valencia a 1.90 decimal odds to win the handicap.

Punters, on the contrary, are putting 82% of the total wagers on the home side as Valencia has not won away in their last 4 consecutive games.

Although ManUtd almost always win their final game in Round 1, I am not so confident this time with Arsenal looming over our shoulders at the weekend.

I think ManUtd probably will settle for a draw and qualify as group winner.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (7 Dec 2010)

FC Twente vs Tottenham Hotspur
(UEFA Champions League Group Stage)

We are through to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League, and the next game determines whether we will top the group (and be part of the seeded pot for the next draw).

We will travel to the city of Enschede, home of last season's Eredivisie champions. We had knocked them 4-1 back at the Lane a couple of months ago, and FC Twente will be relishing revenge at their home turf of De Grolsch Veste, with nothing to play for but pride.

Our lineup has taken a tremendous blow since the Liverpool game, with Kaboul and Van der Vaart adding to our long list of injured players. Possible starters (likely 4-4-2) would be Gomes at the goal mouth, Assou-Ekotto, Gallas, Bassong and Hutton at the back, Bale, Palacios, Modric and Lennon at midfield, and Defoe/Pavlyuchenko and Crouch up front. Dawson, though unused in the Birmingham game, might appear in this game.

FC Twente will be without their striker Ruiz and leftback Kuiper, but they have virtually everyone starting from their first team.

Expect a crunch match, and a grand finale game to the group stages.

COYS!!!!!

Weekend Review - 4 Dec 2010

Blackpool vs Manchester United

Without our 2 centre-backs of Rio Ferdinand and Vidic, anything that can go wrong with Man Utd will go wrong. Without them, we leak goals like leaking water and draw too many matches, but we are currently 2 points ahead of Chelsea. Now with the Carling Cup out of our sight, we can focus on Premier League till Jan 2011 with a FA Cup 3rd Round against Liverpool.

Blackpool, a surprise package in the Premier League. They are not even in the relegation zone yet. He took in those rejects from Premier League, and with nothing to prove, is taking Blackpool to new heights.

Blackpool Team News: Dekel Keinan, Chris Basham, Marlon Harewood, Matthew Gilks and Billy Clarke are out.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia, Paul Scholes and Chris Smalling are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.5 handicap. With Blackpool nothing to prove against the Big 4, i have a doubt that Man Utd will clear the handicap. Avoid!!

Game is postponed due to adverse weather conditions.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 4 December 2010)

Birmingham vs Tottenham Hotspur
What a week we had!  This must be one of the best string of result Spurs have achieved.  And now, we face a toughie at St. Andrews against a Birmingham squad that just dispatched Aston Villa to reach the semi-finals of the Carling Cup.

Birmingham have a good home record with just one defeat in 22 games at home.  And Spurs will be without Rafael van der Vaart, Younes Kaboul, King and Huddlestone.  The good news is that Dawson is back and should get some action this weekend.  I wonder if ‘arry will deploy 2 up front that seem to work so well for us this past week.  It does allow very open and flowing football and the down side is that we become leaky at the back too.

I just feel that the roller coaster ride must come down sometime and a draw for us would be nice away from home.  That said, I am wishing that the lads will surprise everyone and continue the great run of results we have had.

Always exciting when we support the Lilywhites! COYS!!!
