Midweek Review - 30 Mar 2010

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United

"Did we have a player called Own Goal?"
-Gary, 30 Mar 2010

Did we have a player called Own Goal? Apparently this season, he had scored 11 goals for us. And if goal difference is to play a part in the title championship, he will be credited part of it.

6 games to go and Arsenal was the unfortunate one to lose ground on the championship.

We have 3 important games starting from this week with Chelsea sandwich in between. And we can also see why Fergie is resting Rooney over the weekend. Look like Fergie doesnt really care about breaking Cristiano Ronaldo's goals 2 seasons ago.

26 May 1999 was the day that Man Utd break Bayern's heart by scoring 2 injury time goals to win their first Champion League Cup. 11 years on, will Bayern exact revenge? Bayern did exact revenge by defeating Man Utd and win the Champion League in 2001 but till now, they have not progress past the quarter-final stage.

Bayern Team News: Bastian Schweinsteiger is the only absentee.

Man Utd Team News: John O'Shea and Michael Owen are out of this tie.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.25 handicap. Take Man Utd for the win.

Congrat also to Hotdog for notching his first score on the Marksmen Board.

Weekend Review - 27 Mar 2010

Bolton Wanderers vs Manchester United

"The win against Liverpool is a psychological boost to us, but dented hopes of a 4th place finishing to Liverpool."
-Gary, 27 March 2010

7 games to go and Man Utd is leading the table. 2nd placed Chelsea is one point behind with Arsenal further 2 points behind us. Any slip up will have a drastic change in the standings. With all 3 teams playing on the same day, this weekend will be nail-biting one.

The win against Liverpool is a psychological boost to us, but dented hopes of a 4th place finishing to Liverpool. Bragging rights to us again.

Bolton's current manager is Owen Coyle. As long as they hit the magical mark of 41, they are safe for this season. Bolton cant seem to get over Sam Allardyce. Yes, he gives Bolton the boring football by hitting the long ball up. Yet the supporters are loving it. And when other managers such as Sammy Lee and Gary Megson using different tactics, supporters booed them. Newcastle fans have never forgive Sam Allardyce for introducing that tactic to Newcastle United.

Bolton Team News: Gretar Rafn Steinsson, Joey O'Brien, Stuart Holden, Chris Basham, Gavin McCann and Sean Davis are out.

Man Utd Team News: Danny Welback, Ritchie De Laet, Wes Brown, Anderson, Michael Owen and John O'Shea are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. Take Man Utd for the win.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (27 March 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Portsmouth FC

What is seen as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming FA Cup semi-final, beleagured Portsmouth will travel up to north London tomorrow to face our boys.

Redknapp will be facing his old team with a few injuries in the squad. Players with a "maybe" status are Pavlyuchenko, Bassong and Palacios. Definite "out" are Corluka, Jenas and Defoe, as well as our missed-for-a-long-time King, Woodgate and Lennon. This means that we may see our Icelandic striker Gudjohnsen partnering with Crouch up front, our midfield stalwarts Bale, Bentley, Modric and Huddlestone, and our defence Dawson, Kaboul and Assou-Ekotto, in the game.

Though being thrashed by another London club during the midweek, Grant's Pompey would still want to show their resilience despite their financial situation and position in the league table, though I would say they are facing an uphill task in containing a resurgent Spurs.

Villa had slipped up, and so did Manchester City. We would need a win to boost our distance further up in the table to maintain our 4th spot.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (FA Cup Quarterfinals Replay, 24 March 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham

Spurs are one match away from a semi-final clash with Portsmouth at Wembley with Fulham still in the way. While this is a home tie for us, it is no cake walk.

Fulham are coming off a high after beating the mighty Juventus last week in the Europa League but got their confidence rocked a bit by losing to Manchester City over the weekend. Nevertheless, Roy Hodgson will make sure his squad regroups and focus on this replay as well. It always makes me nervous whenever former Spurs players play against us so I will be wary of Simon Davies, Danny Murphy, Paul Konchesky, and Bobby Zamora.

Redknapp will no doubt have to field Gudjohnsen and Crouch upfront as Pavlyuchenko and Defoe are still nursing injuries. I am not sure where the goals will be coming from but I believe that Gudjohnsen, Modric, Kranjcar and Bale will do their best to provide them.

Great weekend for ManUtd fans as I am typing before we get the results from the Chelsea game. Hopefully, we get that result in our favour as we march towards the League Title.

Lucky escape for Bedokian who made the last minute switch from a Liverpool victory to a ManUtd one to be handsomely rewarded with the full 5 points and a notch up the Marksmen Board together with Weimeng, Redherring and myself.

Well done everybody!

Weekend Review - 21 March 2010

Manchester United vs Liverpool

"13 games to go, 10 more goals to hit the target"
- Gary, 21 March 2010

Rooney scored 2 goals against Fulham and have 32 goals to his name in all competition. Wondering whether he will do it against Liverpool in order to hit the target of 42 goals by the end of the season? 13 games to go, 10 more goals to hit the target.

Our Champions League opponents will be none other than Bayern Munich. And if we get past Bayern, we will either get Lyon or Bordeaux in the semi-final. The route to final in Madrid looks easy for Man Utd.

Our remaining 8 games is by no means easy. We have Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Man City to play for. Chelsea also need to face Liverpool and Tottenham in the run-in to the title. As for Arsenal, they have Tottenham and Man City. Look like we need a favour from Tottenham, but then again, Tottenham could be cursing their luck that they need to face 3 title challengers in the final 8 games.

Man Utd Team News: Ryan Giggs, Owen Hargreaves, John O'Shea, Anderson, Michael Owen, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, Ritchie De Laet, Rafael and Danny Welback are out.

Liverpool Team News: Alberto Aquilani, Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap. The last 3 games against Liverpool are all losses. Not worth taking Man Utd as i believe they will drop points against Liverpool. Liverpool will try their best to secure their 4th spot.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (20 March 2010)

Stoke City FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

Our boys would be travelling to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke City FC this Saturday.

We have now entered the final leg of the race for the coveted 4th spot, and from now on every game, point and goal would be important to us. We had slipped up against Stoke early in the season, and now we could not afford to slip up, and at the same time we have to gain back our "face" from that loss.

Defoe is out (most likely for a long while) due to hamstring injuries, and our woes do not end with just strikers - Huddlestone, Jenas, Lennon, Woodgate and King are still out (and also probably for a long while), and our youngsters Walker and Rose are also out. This looks like a job for our Tri-Croat combo of Modric, Krancjar and Corluka, and our either 2 of 3 strikers Gudjohnsen, Palyuchenko and Crouch to start.

The only fear that we have of Stoke is Delap and his throw-ins-that-look-like-free-kicks. They had managed to draw with Aston Villa last weekend at home.

Even though we have to face the 3 teams above us on the table in the coming weeks in our quest for a Champions League spot, we have to win this first.

The top 4 stumbled last weekend but were fortunate enough to have a goal bonus or 2 to cushion the damage.

I think it'll be a while before anyone overhauls the 7-point lead and pip ihawk98 to the top spot, if at all.

We are down to the run in with less than 10 games to go. Let's make every game count if we want to remain in the title hunt.

Good luck.

Weekend Review - 14 March 2010

Manchester United vs Fulham

"Wayne Rooney score with his head so much that he doesnt know how to score with his legs now."
-Gary, 14 March 2010

Wayne Rooney is the second player to score both home and away tie against AC Milan. One match commentator even exclaimed loudly, "Wayne Rooney score with his head so much that he doesnt know how to score with his legs now." But Rooney proved him wrong by scoring the 2nd goal via his legs.

Now 2 English clubs is confirmed in the quarter final of European Cup and we shall see who is the next opponents to face Arsenal and Man Utd next. At the point of writing, Chelsea is not confirmed as they still have a 2nd leg tie against Inter Milan this coming week.

Wayne Rooney has 30 goals to his name this season. With 5 more European Cup games to play (that is to the final) and 9 Premier League games to go, he is on course to break Cristiano Ronaldo's 42 goal tally and could even surpassed Denis Law's 46 goal tally that had yet to be broken. That means Wayne Rooney have to score 2 goals per game in order to achieve that. Hopefully he can start doing it for tomorrow's game against Fulham.

Man Utd Team News: Ryan Giggs, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Anderson, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen are out.

Fulham Team News: Danny Murphy, Andrew Johnson and John Pantsil are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap. With Rooney on a rich vein of form and an extra day of rest, i will expect Man Utd to clear the handicap.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (13 March 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Blackburn Rovers

My colleague asked me yesterday whether our boys really love to play football. His rationale being we were involved in so many FA Cup replays that a conspiracy theory had formed up in his mind - Spurs players go for them so that they could play (and score) more.

OK, the above was about last week's game. Now, let us get on with this coming weekend.

Spurs will host Blackburn Rovers in an early kick-off this Saturday, and Blackburn's away record this season seems to favour us, having only won once while away. Furthermore, their defence, according to some football reviewers, are considered patchwork, since they are without their usual regulars such as Nelsen and Jacobsen.

But still, we should not let our guard down, after all we are somewhat operating on a patchwork midfield as well. We are already without Lennon for a while and it is possible that Huddlestone will not start. I guess it is probably time to deploy our Tri-Croat combo of Modric, Corluka and Krancjar, and DP (Defoe-Pavlyuchenko, or Deadly Pair :P).

Midweek Review - 10 Mar 2010

Manchester United vs AC Milan

"Welcome back, David Beckham!"
-Gary, 10 Mar 2010

Paul Scholes had hit the century goals in 359 appearances in the Premier League. His first debut was in 24 Sep 1994 against Ipwich Town.

Today match against AC Milan could be crucial. And this will be the first time David Beckham will be coming home since his move to Real Madrid in 2003.

Milan was the last team that beat Man Utd in Old Trafford in 2005, before the Red Devils going on a 23 match unbeaten run and got halted by Besiktas earlier in the campiagn. However Man Utd can also take heart that they have a strong home record against Italian teams. Whatever the facts are, the 2nd leg will be more interesting to see than the 1st leg.

Welcome back, David Beckham!

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Anderson, John O'Shea, Michael Owen, Ryan Giggs and Wes Brown are out.

AC Milan Team News: Massimo Oddo and Kakha Kaladze are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.5 handicap. I foresee a draw and Man Utd to progress to the next round.

Congrats to ihawk98 for being the first to hit the century with a whopping 7-point lead!

It was a weekend where everybody got the Everton win right and the West Ham-Bolton result wrong. It is very much up to the goal-bonus to make the difference up or down the ladder.

So please put in more thought in getting the score coz that 1 point make just be the one to make the difference where you are on the rungs.

Good luck and off we go to the next round!

Weekend Review - 6 March 2010

Wolvehampton Wanderers vs Manchester United

"I didnt know Premier League likes to play musical chairs."
-Gary, 6 March 2010

Ok, so we have the first cup of the season and what next? League and European Cup?

Rooney seem to have a knack of scoring goals with his head now. Man Utd's tactics now is like supply the ball to Valencia and cross to the Rooney and heads it in. Doesnt this seem familiar with someone by the name of David Beckham?

The league is also crazy. The top 3 teams are pulling away from the rest. Arsenal is currently 9 points from the 4th team, which is taken up by Tottenham. One week is Man Utd lose, another week is Chelsea lose. I didnt know Premier League likes to play musical chairs.

With 11 more games to go and one confirmed relegated team, Wolves is hovering along the relegation zone. Not a good sign when Mick McCarthy is managing the team.

Wolves Team News: David Edwards is the only absentee.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, John O'shea, Ryan Giggs, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Rafael and Jonny Evans are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. Take Man Utd for the win.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (FA Cup Quarterfinals, 6 March 2010)

   Fulham vs Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs will be aiming to get to the last 4 in this season’s FA Cup competition.  But what a time to have a tough fixture away from home with the mounting injuries we have to our midfielders.

Redknapp is no stranger to a strong cup run, having taken Portsmouth to the finals and winning the FA Cup a couple of years ago.  He will now have to dig deep into his squad to clear this round.  Jenas just had surgery and Huddlestone is out with an ankle injury.  With Bentley nursing a groin and Lennon still out, the starting midfield could comprise Bale on the left (and BAE taking the left wingback spot), Modric in a central role and Kranjcar on the right.  Would Gudjohnsen get a start in midfield?

Crouch made a case to regain his starting role with 2 goals for England in midweek.  But I believe Harry will go with the hot hand at the moment and “ride the russian” Roman in front with Defoe.

Fulham are no pushovers at home so this will be a tightly fought contest.  I am cautiously optimistic.

Results - Games 27 - 28 Feb 2010 EPL Prediction League 2009/2010

It's one of those times where 3 points for the weekend is a great result and I for once is one the right side of the result.

Didn't manage to climb the ladder but at the very least I did close up the gap somewhat.

I am 19 points away from the top and only 10 league games to go, I think this season is more or less over for me. Perhaps a Top 5 finish would be more realistic for me.

Haiz.
