As we reflect…

The international break has come at an opportune time for Spurs fans.  After taking a 5 goal smacking by the blue half of Manchester, perhaps Daniel Levy and ‘arry will now make sure we get a couple of quality signings by 31 August 2011.

Meanwhile, for those who would like a glimpse of how the emotions of Spurs fans went last weekend, just watch the video below.  A group of Malaysia Spurs members got together to watch the match and it was captured by local web tv outfit Hoohaa.my:

Results - Game 27 - 28 Aug 2011 EPL Prediction League 2011/2012

Wow. 8-2. For a moment I thought I was looking at water polo score. As if the 5-1 demolition of Spurs wasn't bad enough, I woke up to a 8-2 score between the two giants. Wow.

Speaking of Arsenal, I can't help but feel like the Gunners as I continue to dwell in the cellar albeit finally brought duck with 2 miserable points.

We also welcome back Raynaldo for another season!

Congrats to Beaver21 for taking the early need but denied the season's first Perfect-10 by the woodwork.

As a consolation, both Everton and Beaver21 chalked up another on the Marksmen Board while redherring and cool402 opened their respective accounts.

Kudos.

Weekend Review - 28 Aug 2011

Manchester United vs Arsenal

First of all, our Champions League opponents for this season will be Benfica, Basel and Otelul Galati. Our 3rd round Carling Cup opponents will be Leeds United.

In just one week, we will be facing the 2nd London team after winning 3-0 against Tottenham. The way I see it, there could be a change of Big 4 this season. I believe the Big 4 consist of Man Utd, Chelsea, newly appointed Man City and lost in the wilderness Liverpool.

Arsenal have lost the plot when they have no experience leader on the field such as Viera. Even if they did bring in an experienced player, it will take some time to get the engine running.

Man Utd Team News: Rio Ferdinand and Vidic are still out.

Arsenal Team News: Gervinho, Emmanuel Frimpoong and Alex Song are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1 ball handicap. I would say not worth the bet as it could be an odd goal winner in Man Utd.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 28 August 2011)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City

In the new world order of the Premier League, Manchester City is turning out to be a new rival for Spurs in the battle for Champions League spots every year.  Two seasons ago, we beat them 1-0 to ensure qualification for the Champions League playoffs via a Peter Crouch goal.  And last season, we lost 1-0 to them away via a Peter Crouch own goal and lost out on a playoff spot for Europe’s elite football competition.

We have played City a total of 124 times in the league and have won 47 times to their 46.  We have won 11 and lost just 2 of the last 16 matches against City and have lost just once in the last 30 Premier League matches at White Hart Lane.  Yet we have to be cautious.  This City team is different.

Mancini has been given a very good team this season and their strike rate has improved significantly in the first 2 games of this season.  With the addition of Samir Nasri to their already talent-filled team, Spurs will have to stay focused throughout the match.

Modric should be available for a start this weekend while new loan signing Adebayor is match-tied against his parent club.  After a less than convincing start against the red half of Manchester the previous week, Spurs will need to play more as a team.  All the industry across the pitch is useless if the final ball is found wanting (yes Lennon, Defoe and van der Vaart, I am talking about you guys) or if the player takes a selfish shot at goal.  There is no better game to kickstart our league ambitions than by getting our first home win on Sunday.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (25 Aug 2011)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Heart of Midlothian
(UEFA Europa League Playoff Stage, 2nd Leg)

This game marked the first on our home soil, and with a 5-away-goal advantage, this game is Spurs' to lose.

Our boys were back from Manchester with a horrendous defeat to the red half, and we will be facing their blue half this coming Sunday. With that in mind, this return leg of the Europa League game will see more of our youngsters in action rather than the regulars, such as Kane, Carroll and Townsend. Modric, with his minor injury and possible transfer, may start in this, too.

Hearts would have nothing to play for but pride in this game. It is one of their rare visits to a stadium on English soil. My take is they will exit out of this European competition in a burst of fire and concentrate on their league back in Scotland.

Onward we march. C'mon you Spurs!!!!!

I am going to assume wsqinanf is the same person as edwinsng and so I am going to lump their two scores together unless advised otherwise.

Welcome Beaver21 and necroastr back to a new season. Not far behind from the early bird as we are only a match ahead, yet but of them had a 6-point haul to sit amongst the top.

I am having as bad a season as Arsenal this year occupying the cellar right now. Wait..... even Arsenal has 1 point from last week.

Dang!!

Weekday Review - 21 Aug 2011

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

A shaky start but with 3 points in the bag from the first game, we will take it. Even as the first round of games had ended, there is no doubt Man City is signalling their intention right from the start.

With Tottenham visting us after midweek game against Hearts, and Man Utd no midweek games, I cant help but wonder will it be another 3 points in the bag? Tottenham have not strengthen their squad in the off season and certain key players are leaving. Will it be deja-vu when ex-Spurs Berbatov leaves on the last day of transfer window and not able to get replacement in time?

Man Utd Team News: Rio Ferdinand and Vidic are out.

Spurs Team News: A full squad to choose from.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd give 0.75 handicap. Take Man Utd for the win and the handicap.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 23 August 2011)

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Almost a year ago in October 2010, this same fixture saw a controversial goal by Nani who after Gomes put the ball down thinking that Spurs had been given a free-kick for a handball by Nani.  And our record at Old Trafford is not encouraging.  So calling it “tough” to start our Premier League season with this away encounter is putting it mildly in my opinion.  Yet, we can always hope!

In the last 20 matches against Spurs, the Red Devils have won 15 and drawn 5.  I am hoping we would break this horrible record this weekend.  United are forced to field a makeshift backline as the established central defensive pair of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are expected to be on the sidelines for two and five weeks respectively. This means that United’s defence will have a distinctly young look to it over the coming weeks, starting against Spurs, as Phil Jones (19) and Johnny Evans (23) are set to deputize in the centre, with Chris Smalling (21) likely to fill-in at right back for Rafael Da Silva.  The Red Devils have also gone 5 premier league games without a clean sheet.

Spurs will be confident after playing fantastic flowing one-touch football against Hearts last Thursday in the Europa League playoffs.  With Modric returning after sitting out in midweek, the Lilywhites have the speed and quality to take the game to United.  I think we will see a 4-4-1-1 formation with Bale, Modric, Huddlestone and Lennon anchoring the midfield, and van der Vaart sitting between them and Defoe upfront. A winning start to the league would be gravy but I would take a draw away as well.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (18 Aug 2011)

Heart of Midlothian vs Tottenham Hotspur
(UEFA Europa League Playoff Stage, 1st Leg)

Welcome to the new season!

With the game against Everton postponed due to the riots, Spurs will begin the season in the playoff stage of the UEFA Europa League against Hearts in Tynecastle, Edinburgh.

After much speculation during the summer months, the transfer situation for Spurs is (at the moment) a relatively quiet one, with the purchase of goalkeeper Friedel and the sale of Keane being the only big news. Thus, the squad looks relatively the same as at the end of the last season and the team selection would be standard. However, injuries plagued our central midfielders and we may see our youngster Livermore taking on the task (i.e. no Sandro, Palacios, Huddlestone, Jenas AND Modric).

The Scottish Premier League had started earlier and so far Hearts had only won 1 of their opening 4 games, but it seems that both the team and their fans are looking forward to this clash, something like a SPL-EPL crossover match. With an ex-Portuguese footballer Sergio taking over the helm just 2 weeks ago, this game would probably be the biggest test of his managerial career.

Spurs victory looked certain, though the Scots are not to be underestimated.

Welcome back one and all to the new season of the EPL Prediction League. How time flies, this is our 8th season and we are still going!

The turnout for this season is not too good but I think having laid off during the summer for so long, some of us may need a reminder to get back in here.

Anyone has contact to guys like Delay, Raynaldo, Apollo, necroastr (and more) to get them back?

Please give them a buzz.

p.s. We will be having Euro 2012 Prediction League at the end of the season.

Weekend Review - 14 Aug 2011

West Brom vs Manchester United

Welcome to the latest season of Barclays English Premier League. Our first game is to Hawthorns. Against West Brom.

Roy Hodgson spent the second half of the last season at West Brom, after failing to revive a certain Liverpool. He seem to be doing better to mid-table teams like Fulham, where he guided them to Europa Cup Final.

Man Utd, on the other hand, had won the 19th title to overtake Liverpool for the most titles won. And they are not resting their laurels as Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea have gone to the transfer market to buy players.

This season, we will be seeing the average age of Man Utd players to be dropping from 28 years old to 25 years old. The Community Shield against Man City throw up some exciting prospects such as Tom Cleverly and Danny Welbeck.

Everyone knows what last season Man Utd is having when they can win all their home games yet able to lose or draw at away games. Now we will get to see whether it will continue in the new season.

Weekend Review - 7 Aug 2011

Manchester United vs Manchester City

Welcome to the new season of Barclays English Premier League! And to start the season going, we have the curtain raiser of Community Shield and is a derby match between Man Utd and Man City.

Man Utd have lost a couple of players due to retirement of the game, mainly Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville. They also release or sold players such as Owen Hargreaves (good grief), Wes Brown and John O'Shea to Sunderland. To make up the shortfall, they went into the market and bought David De Gea, Phil Jones and Ashley Young. We are still waiting for one more player to come in and is very obvious who is it.

Man City, on the other hand, have too many players at their disposal but other clubs are finding hard to get them due to sky high wages. They bought Sergio Aguero, Stefan Savic, Gael Clichy to further improve their league position and European commitments.

We also welcome Queens Park Rangers, Swansea City and Norwich City back to the Premier League.

Coming up next is the Prediction League! Stay tuned!
