Results - Games 28 - 29 Jun 2010 World Cup Prediction League 2010

We are down to the quarter-finals and Raynaldo is holding on to the slender lead of 1 point.

Congrats also to cool402 for leading the Marksmen Board at 9 games.

This World Cup Prediction League looks quite tight at the top and there may be a possibility that we may need a tie-breaker for this.

Please keep a lookout for the entry where we release the game for the Final prediction. There will be some slight changes in how you should predict.

Heads up everybody.

My apologies for the mistakes of late as it is very hard to be updating and traveling at the same time.

Many thanks to those who help to double check the scores. As least we are sure that they are accurate with more than just 1 pair of eyes looking.

Anyway, congrats to Raynaldo for taking the lead and a comfortable 4-point lead.

JayWalk's World Cup 2010 Crystal Ball Gazing - Round of 16

Is it me or is this by far the most boring World Cup ever? A paltry 101 goals in the first 48 games has got to be some kind of low scoring record?

The number could have been worse if the teams didn't start to pump in the goals on their respective 3rd matches.

Well, the good news is that the matches will definitely start to get better and more exciting as I wait with baited breath.

So anyway, my predictions didn't quite turn out to be accurate with only a mere 3 exact matchups of out a total of 8.

In any case, I shall try my hand again with this round of 16.

Uruguay vs South Korea

South Korea really surprise me with their performance and a pleasant one if I may add.

Originally, I felt that South Korea's 4th placing during the World Cup 2002 was a fluke and that the referees really helped a lot.

So while they have the result, I still felt that they lacked credibility.

Well today, I stand corrected. Obviously Park Ji Sun's stint at ManUtd has done him a lot of good and he is really up there with the rest of the big boys. Expect more Koreans to show up in the European arena after this World Cup.

On the flip side, Diego Forlan was the butt of many of my jokes during his time at ManUtd, Diego Forgone, Forlorn, Forget It, For Chrissakes!! Score! Dammit!!

Again, I am corrected once more as he has done extremely well after he left us for Spain and has shone again here in South Africa.

I see this prolific striker taking Uruguay to the next level and Korea dream run ends here. I'd still give them a standing ovation for getting this far though.

USA vs Ghana

The Yanks are top of the table which probably floored everybody. A country who can't even get football correct (You don't play football with your hands, you use your foot. That's why it's called football. Get it?) is ahead of England?

They are up again Ghana the lone survival from the African continent. You can be sure all the vuvuzuelas will be honking from them from now on.

I say this would be an even match but Ghana, with the entire African continent behind them from hereon will have the edge.

Germany vs England

The reason for seeding is so that the strong teams do not meet early and get eliminated prematurely. This is solely a commercial strategy to keep ratings up high.

However, this only works if the relevant teams play to their script. Unfortunately, this is the case as the Three Lions were mere Three PussyCats. I think even the PussyCat Dolls can get their act together better.

BBC voted Heskey as one who can't even hit the barn door. I am beginning to think that it more of a flattery than insult. Heskey should just pack his pack and go play in the Championship or Division 1. He'd obviously drown in the deeper end of the pool.

I would see this as a done deal in favour of the Germans. However, after the dismal performance at Serbia which includes a penalty miss. I am certainly discounting them by a chunk.

This game would definitely go to a draw at 90 minutes and I'd the English team agrees with me as they are training penalty kicks everyday.

Still, I think the Germans will go through and the English FA continues to remain blind to how overpaid and underdelivered that this bunch of Brits are.

Argentina vs Mexico

Ironically the weakest link of this team is their greatest player. Maradona is a time bomb waiting to go off but I think the timer may just last long enough for them to complete this tournament.

I foresee one of the finalists coming from here. Either Argentina with their squad of superb talents punish every teams that comes in their way or Mexico will be on the Fairy Tale Run Choo Choo Train and beating Germany as well subsequently.

Perhaps, it's the hopeless romantic in me there I will gun for a Mexican victory here (and Maradona caught in a drugged naked stupor in the streets of Johannesburg). All aboard!!!!

Netherlands vs Slovakia

The Netherlands are one of the 2 teams to go 3 for 3 for a total of a maximum 9 points. If we take into account their 8 for 8 in the qualifiers, the 11 for 11. An impressive record indeed.

Still they are damn boring to watch as they play like they are in summer camp.

Worse than the Germans.

So don't expect surprises here as they advance to the next round, boring their opponents to death.

Brazil vs Chile

This guarantees a cracker of a match as the Conmebol Qualifiers' No.1 and 2 teams are paired together. Brazil are not known to self destruct this early in the tournament and so I say they are through to the next round but not before the Chilean give them a run for their money.
The tale of the Chilean flag salvaged from the horrible earthquake and now flying proudly with the Chilean team is certainly touching but I don't think that would be enough inspiration for them to overcome the mighty Brazillians.

Sorry guys. I gotta go with Brazil on this one.

Paraguay vs Japan

Japan got lucky when they are drawn into a relatively easy group. Knockout rounds are a totally different ball game (pardon the pun) and I say the South Americans will win this and advance.

This is certainly a good year for South America as all 5 teams are in the Round of 16.

Spain vs Portugal

This is going to be another exciting game to look forward to. It is like the European version of the Brazil vs Chile.

Spain should prevail in this encounter on acccount of their pedigree while C.Ronaldo will continue to slip and slide all over the place to con the referee.

I hope the cry baby gets a yellow card for cheating. Red would be better, but I am nice guy. So yellow is good enough.

So with that, the Quarter-Final match ups should look like this:

Netherlands vs Brazil

Uruguay vs Ghana

Mexico vs Germany

Paraguay vs Spain

Results - Games 17 - 18 Jun 2010 World Cup Prediction League 2010

You have to give it to Arrenn for being the only brave soul to predict a draw for the England match.

Congrats to Arrenn for being the only 9-pointer in this round where almost everyone had their carpets pulled from under them.

Just a note to everybody, please check your entries once they are submitted. Look out if your entry has accidentally overwritten another as a result of multiple people posting at the same time.

England to be eliminated? Perhaps Heskey should be goalkeeper. He seems to have a knack of keeping the ball out of the net.

Results - Games 15 - 16 Jun 2010 World Cup Prediction League 2010

A big welcome to old bird, edwingsng, for rejoining us!

What did I say about not being too late to join us at this juncture? edwinsng is already off the bottom, courtesy of Roberttty who probably forgot to predict.

In any case, congrats to Cool402 for taking the pole this round as a result of being the only one to get 4 out of 6 correct outcomes. We were all floored by the Swiss and Kiwi coups.

Also congrats to quite the few of you who opened account on the Marksmen Board too!

Results - Games 13 - 14 Jun 2010 World Cup Prediction League 2010

Looks like it's a pretty good turn out this World Cup as we now have 20 players in the League!

Welcome to new players like Nick, Andy, Roberttty and 8plus1.

Don't worry about your current positions lads, it is pretty easy to catch up.

I am your perfect example.

I started the league languishing almost at the bottom of the table and just in the period of 1 round, I scored a massive 20 points *pat on my own back* and is now in 3rd position from 14th.

Congrats to KingMeng for taking the Yellow Jersey in the second round. Let's see if you get to keep it for another round.

On to the next round, fellas!

p.s. Oh yah. One more thing. I set up a new Si Ginah Board. Try not to get your name up there, wokay?

Results - Games 11 - 12 Jun 2010 World Cup Prediction League 2010

Welcome to the first table update of the World Cup 2010 Prediction League!

A massive start for current EPL 2009/2010 Prediction League champion, ihawk98, for grabbing pole at 13 points. We have a newbie right at top, just behind at 11 points. Well done, jamesdubya!

Also, congrats to ihawk98, delay, jamesdubya, everton and hotdog for opening account in the Marksmen Board.

The Perfect-10 Hall Of Fame will not be featured here as the number of matches to predict per round is not consistent throughout the tournament and as such will not be fair to those who have to get 6 matches right versus those who need to get fewer matches correct in the later rounds..

Still, it is only Round 1 and we have many more games to predict. I am sure those at the bottom, like me :( , will be climbing steadily as we start to find our footing; while those at the top will have to worry about their beginner's luck and/or honeymoon sustainability.

It will be a tight tournament and promises to have a lot of fun.

On to the next round of predictions then!

p.s. It's still early in the tournament. Get more friends to join us!

IMPORTANT : Please identify yourself when you submit a comment/entry i.e. No Anonymous posting, please. I am having trouble figuring out who has just made his/her amendments.

Look, we have 16 of us submitting 6 predictions per round. That's 96 lines I have to go through just because someone decides to make a change.

Don't get me wrong here. Making changes is perfectly fine. Make as many as you feel comfortable. However, identifying yourselves when you post, makes it easier for me to know who needs what to be change. Thanks in advance!

JayWalk's World Cup 2010 Crystal Ball Gazing - Round 1

Well, the long awaited World Cup is finally here and it's time to dust off the crystal ball and do some gazing and see what floats to the surface.

I will be doing the predictions for the first round and subsequently add entries for the Round of 16, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Finals.

So without further ado, here are my predictions for Round 1.

Group 1: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France

As much as I am still sore about them cheating the Irish of a legitimate place in the World Cup, the cheater-bugs French will top the group with maximum points. Mexico will take second spot after winning the very crucial tournament opener against host South Africa.

Group 2: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece

Argentina taking maximum points is a given here. But the remaining 3 teams will pose a very interesting situation where they are unable to break the deadlock with each other.

As a result, 3 of the 6 games in the group that do not involve Argentina will all end with a draw. So the second spot will go to the team that loses to Argentina by the smallest margin which I predict Greece to go through as I see Nigeria and Korea Republic both losing to Argentina by more than 3 goals each.

Group C: England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia

England to take full points as they have done as always while USA takes second spot.

Algeria will fail to score even a single goal.

Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana

Germany tops this group without question.

The situation is exactly identical to Group B and I predict Ghana to qualify for suffering the smallest defeat against Germany compared to Slovenia and Australia.

Australia did surprisingly well in the last World Cup but I say it's just beginner's luck. Australia to exit at the bottom of the table, although having same number of points with Serbia and Ghana, but having the worst result against Germany.

Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon

Netherlands will continue their winning streak since 8-0-0 in the qualifiers and take this round 3-0-0 for 9 points.

Cameroon takes 4 points to qualify as Denmark fails to win against a stubborn Japan on the final day of the round with a draw.

Group F: Slovakia, Paraguay, Italy, New Zealand

New Zealand will be the whipping boy of the group and go home without a goal nor a point.

Italy takes this group with all 9 points while Paraguay edges out Slovakia on goal difference with both teams level on 4 points.

Group G: Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal, North Korea.

The two Portuguese-speaking nations will advance with Brazil ahead of Portugal.

North Korea are putting the goalkeeper's gloves on their striker as a result of manpower shortage. The guessing game here is not if North Korea is able to repeat their historical upset but rather how many goals they are going to concede.

I say the magic number is 11. Brazil will hit them for 6 in their opening match.

Group H: Honduras, Chile, Spain, Switzerland

Spain as always will go 3-0-0 to top the table. Chile upsets Switzerland on goal difference on account of a bigger victory over Honduras.

Switzerland fails to capitalise on Honduras' weakness with a meek 1-0 victory on the last day of the round which costs them a place in the Round of 16.

With that, the Round of 16 will look like this.

France vs Greece

England vs Ghana

Germany vs USA

Argentina vs Mexico

Netherlands vs Paraguay

Brazil vs Chile

Italy vs Cameroon

Spain vs Portugal
