Fixture Focus–Spurs (Europa League, 30 November 2011)

Tottenham Hotspur vs PAOK Salonika

Having lost to Rubin Kazan in the last group tie, Spurs can still qualify for the knock-out stages by getting 4 points out of the remaining 2 group matches.

Tonight we entertain the Greek visitors and I am sure ‘arry will field test our youngsters again.  However, some senior players will get the nod too.  Defoe will start as Pavlyuchenko is injured and I am hoping he will continue his scoring run.  The backline will consist of veterans like Corluka, Gallas and Bassong, while Gomes or Cudicini will be in goal.  This will give us some confidence at the back as the fans will undoubtedly “will” the team forward in search of victory.

Our focus is clearly on the league but ‘arry will want the lads to give it their all in this cup competition to see how far we can progress.  A win will put us in good shape for the last group tie in December away to Shamrock in Dublin.

Midweek Review - 30 Nov 2011

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

We are still 5 points behind Man City after been robbed of a win against Newcastle. But then again, we have enough chances to kill the game off yet have to settle for a disappointing draw.

Tonight match against Crystal Palace, we will see a wholesale change of team personnel in this match as Fergie will decide whether to feature these youngsters in the match, such as Ravel Morrison, Ezekiel Fryers, Paul Pogba and Michael Keane.

Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap against Crystal Palace. I realised that Man Utd have contrasting fortunes in Carling Cup compared to the Premier League and Champions League. They scored 3 goals against Leeds and Aldershot. Take Man Utd for the win, handicap and proceed to the semi-final. Opponents waiting for them are Liverpool, Man City and Cardiff.

The odds of having a Manchester derby in the semi-final or final looks very strong.

Greetings from Taiwan!

Have to thank the Gods of Technology for cloud computing or I wouldn't be able to update this on the go without a decent laptop or computer.

I've learnt that the iPad alone can't do this update and so laptops will be around for quite a while and not ready to be killed off by the tablets.

Anyway, congrats to cool402 for taking the lead this week and another notch on the Marksmen Board together with edwinsng

Congrats.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (26 Nov 2011)

West Bromwich Albion FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

This weekend, our boys will be travelling up to the West Midlands to face West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Defoe and Van der Vaart were not on the team bus to West Bromwich as they had picked up injuries, which means we may see a 4-4-2 formation with Adebayor and highly likely Pavlyuchenko up front, a Bale - Modric - Parker - Lennon midfield, and a Assou-Ekotto - King - Kaboul - Walker defence line.

Some of the players Hodgson will be picking for this clash will be the strikers Long, Odemwingie and playmaker Scharner, though the latter two would be racing for fitness for this game.

The Hawthorns are not really a happy hunting ground for us, but with us on a high (3rd in the table, in fact) and with the other traditional powerhouses just 3 points below us, we really need to get the winning momentum going to stay on top.

Weekend Review - 26 Nov 2011

Manchester United vs Newcastle United

We are unable to top our Champions League group as Benfica had a better head to head record against us. And we have to avoid a defeat against Basel in order to qualify for the knockout rounds. Our Champions League route to Munich is a tough one with the prospect of facing Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and wait for this, APOEL Nicosia.

Newcastle is facing both Manchester teams within a week and is a test to see where they really stand. Are they in for the real thing or just pretend to stay for awhile and go for the long fall down?

Man Utd seem to be facing a crisis at the moment. No strikers to bang in the goals as Wayne Rooney for some unknown reason, likes playing in the midfield now. And Fergie refuses to put Berbatov just because he cant score at the same rate as Javier Hernandez.

Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. Even a newbie could also tell you that Man Utd cant clear the handicap at the rate of goals they are scoring.

Midweek Outlook (22 Nov 2011)

   Manchester United vs Benfica

Memories are the ManCity mauling is still fresh in my mind but it seems that the ManUtd team has long dusted themselves off and carried on with business.

ManUtd then came through with 5 clean-sheet victories as if nothing happened but it must be noted that all the wins were of tiny margins, with the exception of Aldershot. Then again, it's Aldershot. A 3-0 win is considered a small win for us.

This is a very important match for either side as a victory here awards the winning team the luxury of easing off the pedal on final match day of the first round. A victory today not only guarantees qualification to the knock-out stages but very much also assures the top spot of the table. The extra rest will be a much sought-after gift in the midst of the hectic domestic schedule.

Looking ahead, ManUtd has a relatively easy though still hectic Christmas/New Year fixture. Every extra ounce of rest gives us an advantage over ManCity and this would be the best time to make up the 5-point deficit or more.

Vidic will not be featuring today which means Ferdinand needs a partner at the back. Also looking for a partner up from is Rooney, whom despite being missing from training is expected to get on the pitch. Fergie just announced that he still has plans for Berbatov, despite the Bulgarian falling down the pecking order, which may be a hint to start him today.

Now, on to the betting portion of the game. ManUtd is giving a 1-ball handicap and a 2.05 decimal odds to beat it. 1X2 says a less enthusiastic story with a 1.52 payout for a home victory.

In English, it means that while it is impossible (figuratively speaking) for Benfica to bag the 3 points today, there is a chance they may just nick one instead.

The punters so far are more optimistic in favour of the home side with the pot skewing 83% to beat the 1-ball handicap.

My take on the situation is that ManUtd should win this game but again like the previous few results, it would be a small victory. Give the 1-ball handicap which the worst case scenario is that you get your money back since a Benfica draw or win is unlikely.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (21 Nov 2011)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa FC

After the international fixtures, Spurs will be playing host to the Villans this coming Monday night.

And good news is that almost all of our players who played against Fulham will be fit and ready, with probably the exception of Van der Vaart, who had suffered a hamstring injury during a friendly with Switzerland. However, latest news had filtered in stating that the Dutchman could be ready.

Villa would be fielding a likely full squad pending Agbonlahor's fitness. Ex-Spurs players Bent and Hutton will be proving a point to their former clubs, though the latter may have to put up with his ex-colleague Bale in their right flank.

Spurs has been undefeated for the past eight games and some say our luck might run out this time round.

My take is, not now, yet.

Weekend Review - 19 Nov 2011

Swansea City vs Manchester United

This will be the first time Man Utd will playing outside England as Swansea home town is in Wales. Swansea is the first Welsh team to play in the top flight division since the league formation in 1992. I believe another Welsh team could have hold that record if they had not lost in the play off in the Championship over the last 2 season, and is none other than Cardiff City.

With injuries to Chris Smalling, Michael Owen, Ryan Giggs and Danny Welbeck, Fergie have a wide selection of players to play as there is also a midweek game against Benfica where a win will suffice to go to the knockout rounds.

Other than Newcastle, Swansea is a surprise package this season. They held strongly whether in Wales or in England. They held Liverpool to a draw, lost Arsenal to a solitary goal and a heavy thumping by Man City, but they didnt let Man City score until the second half.

Swansea have yet to lose at home this season. Could Man Utd be the first team to do it? With a handicap of 1, I believe Man Utd could do it.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (6 Nov 2011)

Fulham FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

After the away Europa game against Rubin Kazan in Russia, Spurs is going for yet another away fixture against the Cottagers this Sunday.

It does not really affect us much, though, because it would be certain that at most 2 players on the return flight from Russia would be playing against Fulham. Which means that Spurs would be going into this game fresh, with basically the team that played against QPR last week ready and available.

Fulham would be facing some exhaustion problems as most of their first team players had played in the Europa game against Wisla just yesterday. Hughes, Senderos and Davies are out of this match due to injuries.

One significant item for this fixture would be the reunion with Martin Jol, a favourite among the Spurs faithful who led us to 2 5th-place finishes before being unceremoniously kicked out of the club.

With the recent London derbies all churning out high-scores, I expect this would be a bit mild.

Weekend Review - 5 Nov 2011

Manchester United vs Sunderland

Funny that you won 2 games against an European minnow, and you top the group unexpectedly. 2 games to go and we only need 2 points to qualify for the knockout rounds. To think that we draw the first 2 games. Our next game is against Benfica at home. If we win, we are through to the knockout round with 1 game to spare.

For the coming home game against second team for Man Utd Sunderland, it sounds like a friendly between 2 teams. Ex Red Devils against current Red Devils. Phillip Bardsley, Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Kieron Richardson and Frazier Campbell.

Sunderland have not shown their league form from last season as they finish 10th. Now they are hovering around the relegation zone. A case of taking longer to adapt?

Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap. That's a bit high side from my point of view, considering that Man Utd could only manage 2 goals currently. At this point of campaign, points are more important than goal difference, as we are still 5 points behind Man City. Just get the 3 points.

Fixture Focus-Spurs (Europa League, 3 November 2011)

  Rubin Kazan vs Tottenham Hotspur

‘arry stretched the first stringers for almost the full 90mins on Sunday against QPR so that the reserves can be saved for this midweek fixture in Russia.   This is by no means a walkover as Rubin Kazan put up a spirited fight in the tie at the Lane, only to lose 1-0 to a spectacular Pavluychenko free kick goal.

Expect the likes of Defoe, Pavluychenko, Sandro and Gomes to start alongside all our budding youngsters.  We are in good shape in the group and do not necessarily have to win this fixture.  We only need 4 points from the remaining 3 fixtures to progress into the knock out rounds.

The Russian outfit have lost just once at their Central Stadium home in over three months, and that was to Champions League outfit Zenit St Petersburg. Since their defeat in North London they have won one and drawn one in the Russian Premier League, and with a win very much needed in this encounter we can be confident that boss Kurban Berdyev will field his strongest side possible.

All I wish for is no serious injuries to key players for us and come away with a draw.

Midweek Outlook (22 Oct 2011)

Manchester United vs Otelul Galati

We finally opened account in the ECL with an important away win over Galati with 2 Rooney penalties. Not exactly a very convincing story but a precious 3-point haul nevertheless.

That puts us in second place with 5 points before Benfica and if Benfica beats Basel, then they have the 10 points required to qualify to the next round. A victory this round to us is a do-or-die mission and I am going to assume that we will win it.

If we beat Galati 2-0 away, we should beat them 2-0 at home too or more. On that count, we will have 8 points and just as long as we avoid defeat to both Basel and Benfica subsequently, we would qualify too. However, would Fergie settle for second place and risk placing a seeded team early in the second round?

A win over Benfica at Old Trafford on 22 Nov should see us leap frogging with 11 points to Benfica's 10 and knowing Fergie, we will push full steam ahead and grab the final 3 points against Basel just to ensure we finish Round 1 at the top.

Gone is the luxury that we rake in the points early and then cruise the remainder of the final 2 games in Round 1 to allow us to prepare for the hectic Christmas/New Year fixtures.

So the question today is not if we win Galati but if we beat them by 3 goals more or not.

Asian Handicap sets ManUtd at 2.05 to beat the 2.25-ball handicap. 1X2 says ManUtd wins this outright with a 1.09 payout.

The current jackpot sits at ManUtd having 82% of the pot to beat the handicap.

As for me, I'd say yes we will collect the 3-points to keep up with Benfica whom they are expected to beat Basel.

As to if we beat the handicap, I'd say a nay as I feel the current squad is out of sorts at the moment and not exactly very cohesive to be the steam rolling juggernaut that gave us so much to cheer about.
