Midweek Review (30 Dec 2008)

Manchester United vs Middlesbrough

"Points win championship, not goals."
-Gary, 30 Dec 2008

At this rate Man Utd is playing, we will be seeing the same old Chelsea playing style under Mourinho era. 1-0 all the way and still win championship. Having say that, points win championship, not goals. Last season seem to be the exception where Man Utd score too many goals.

Now at home to Middlesbrough for this match, Middlesbrough is a little too down to the table where they are going to fight relegation with 9 other clubs including Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle United, where 3 points seperated them. Out of sudden, English Premier League seem to be the hardest league to play as well.

We are not affected by the festive fixtures as we have 3 days of rest compared to Tottenham. Even the FA Cup tie against Southampton is on the following Sunday!!

Man Utd Team News: Ben Foster, Wes Brown, Owen Hargreaves are out. Patrice Evra is serving 2nd suspension.

Middlesbrough Team News: Didier Digard, Gary O'Neil, Justin Hoyte, Rhys Williams are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.75 ball handicap. Go for the win.

Results - Games 28 Dec 2008 EPL Prediction League 2008/2009

Not much changes in the table as all were right with the Liverpool win and all were equally wrong with the Chelsea draw.

Still, a solitary point was enough for everton to extend his lead albeit by a point. A single point, but a crucial point at that.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (28 Dec 2008)

West Bromwich Albion FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

After a goalless draw, and still stuck at 16th, Spurs will be travelling up (literally) to The Hawthorns, so far the highest ground by altitude in the EPL.

The Baggies had it worse this season. After being crowned champions of the Championship, they found themselves only 1 place above, that of the dreaded 20th position in the Premier League, at this stage.

Spurs, on the other hand, had failed to break the Fulham deadlock and were sill rooted in the nether regions of the table, with the dreaded relegation positions staring at them from the back. In the Boxing Day game, Spurs certainly dominated, but needed to find that finishing touch so lacking in the derby.

Off note, Spurs' opponent on Boxing Day would be meeting WBA's opponent on the same day this Sunday.

Nevertheless, COYS!!!!!

Fixture Focus - Spurs (26 December 2008)

Spurs vs Fulham

The loss to Newcastle last weekend has added more stress to Redknapp's holiday season.  Spurs are now just 1 point outside of the relegation zone and wins against Fulham and at West Brom on Sunday are vital in our effort to move towards mid-table safety.  Quite frankly, we showed the lack of depth in our side at St James Park.  With injuries to key personnel, the team lacked the bite and concentration to hold off the barcodes and succumb to another last minute goal.

We lost at Craven Cottage 2 - 1 in November and Fulham must fancy their chances at the Lane given their current form.  We will have our hands full containing ex-Spurs Bobby Zamora, and midfield maestro Jimmy Bullard.  Ex-Spurs players tend to return to haunt us and the added presence of Simon Davies, Danny Murphy and Paul Konchesky could be banana-skins as well, causing us to slip up.  The thing to note though is that Fulham's away form is nothing like their home form, having not won away this season.

Spurs hopes to have Bent back from illness but it should be "bean pole Pav" and Bentley to start in front.  Woody and King are facing fitness tests and we really need them back to marshal the leaky defence.  I hope that Modric continues his goal scoring form and terrorize the Fulham defence this Friday with his nippy runs.  It's Christmas and Spurs must take the gift before us of all 3 points.

COYS!!!

Weekend Review (26 Dec 2008)

Stoke City vs Manchester United

"Manchester United is the world champion. So what!"
-Gary, 26 Dec 2008

Manchester United is the world champion. So what! They have to win European Champions League every season in order to participate in the World Club Cup. Because World Club Cup winners cant defend the trophy the next season. This is one of the loopholes of the World Club Cup. The title is only for bragging rights, but im not entirely over the moon for it.

So now we are back to domestic action with festive fixtures starting with Stoke City on Boxing Day. We have 2 games in hand and if we win it, we will be challenging the title contenders like Chelsea and Liverpool. I just saw the complete fixtures for Man Utd and January 2009 fixtures is the most taxing one. FA Cup to Southampton, Carling Cup semi-final date with Derby and 3 English Premier League match to play in a week! 6 matches in 16 days. *Paging for Voxeros*

Just a short review for this match. Will like to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas.

Stoke City Team News: Salif Diao, Leon Cort, Rory Delap, Mamady Sidibe, Andy Griffin, Dave Kitson, Ryan Shawcross and Liam Lawrence are out.

Man Utd Team News: Ben Foster, Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves are out. Patrice Evra is suspended.

Odds and Analysis: When i first saw the handicap, Man Utd was giving 2 ball. Now at the point of writing, the handicap now is 1.5. Go for the kill.

Interesting weekend to see the Top 4 faltering allowing the rest of the pack to close in! So now we have 8 people within strike range of the Pole Leader.

Tight!

Afternote: My bad for mixing up the score where it should have been a 3-0 victory in favour of Fulham and not Middlesbrough.

The table has been amended with the point duly credited.

Congrats to Everton for being the new table leader as delay stumbled with a 1-point weekend. Better luck next weekend!

Still, congrats to david.hvp, cool402, ihawk98 and myself with adding yet another notch on the Marksmen Board.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (21 Dec 2008)

Newcastle United FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

The Christmas crunch is here - 3 games within a span of 8 days for most of the EPL clubs. Spurs, after satisfactory performances for the past games, were still rooted at 15th position.

This Sunday, we would be travelling up north to one of our bogey grounds - St. James' Park. The Magpies are one spot above us, separated by just goal difference.

We could be seeing Corluka and Pavlyuchenko back from a well-earned rest after they were cup-tied in the game against Spartak Moscow.

It would be a coup if we could win away at Newcastle, for we could be jumping up, at best case, 10th.

Weekend Review (20 Dec 2008)

LDU Quito vs Manchester United

"By right, this competition should have won by Man Utd the first time in 2000. This year is their turn."

-Gary, 20/12/08

For once, Soccernet never provided statistics for the match against Gamba Osaka. The official statistics have to get from FIFA. Tsk.

So now we are in the final against LDU Quito. The first time Man Utd participated in this competition, they got flaks from Football Association for opting out of the FA Cup. They got dumped out of the semi-final in Brazil. After this edition, the venue will change to United Arab Emirates.

By right, this competition should have won by Man Utd the first time in 2000. This year is their turn. On a side note, Man Utd is facing Inter Milan in the Champions League, Jose Mourinho again. Chelsea against Juventus, Arsenal against Roma, and Liverpool against Real Madrid.

LDU Quito Team News: Manager Edgardo Bauza is stepping down after this match regardless of the result.

Man Utd Team News: Wayne Rooney is expected to spearhead the attack with Carlos Tevez. Dimitar Berbetov machim go there on holiday. Pui.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1 ball handicap. Im not going for the handicap, but im going for a small try on the championship winner on Man Utd.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (18 December 2008)

Spurs vs Spartak Moscow (UEFA Cup, Group D)

Pavlyuchenko's former team-mates are in town to try to spoil Spurs progress to the next round.

Spurs just need a point to progress to the knockout stages of the competition but again they face the visiting Russians with a young line up.  Pavlyuchenko would love to play but cannot as Corluka and him are cup-tied.  Mr Bent is down with tonsilitis so this should be a sure start for Frazier Campbell.  King will be kept for the weekend's clash, while Woodgate is having his sore back investigated.  Jenas, Hutton and Giovani are still out injured unfortunately.

One consolation is that Spartak's last competitive game was a few weeks ago and their domestic league ended in November.  So perhaps they will be a tad rusty and lack match fitness tonight.  Nevertheless, Spurs should aim for the win and avoid any nasty injuries to key players as the EPL relegation fight continues this weekend at St. James Park.

Midweek Review (18 Dec 2008)

Gamba Osaka vs Manchester United

"Is this match a competitive match where home side is really home side or friendly match for commercial purposes?"
-Gary, 18 Dec 2008

I looked at Tottenham's game as two points lose, rather than one point gain. Bleh!

So the Red Devils is now in Japan for the Club World Cup semi-final match against Gamba Osaka.

Is this match a competitive match where home side is really home side or friendly match for commercial purposes? Over the last few seasons, Man Utd have make pre-season trips to Asia and Africa. But i cant find any past results against Gamba Osaka, though i know Man Utd have won against Kashima Antlers. And i have a tough time finding Gamba Osaka's logo. >.<

Gamba Osaka Team News: Full squad to choose from.

Man Utd Team News: Ben Foster is out. Ben Amos has been draft in to replace Ben Foster.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. Go for it.

Results - Games 13 - 14 Dec 2008 EPL Prediction League 2008/2009

A pretty quiet weekend as no one is able to make great strides with the predictions. It was a weekend where a 3+point correct prediction gives you great mileage.

And likely so with everton's 3+1 effort to propel him into second place with just a single point away from tying at the top.

Well done!

Weekend Review (13 Dec 2008)

Tottenham Hotspurs vs Manchester United

"Harry have done us 3 times, all during FA Cup."
-Gary, 13 Dec 2008

Well, this game is really meaningless with the only talking point was Rooney's temperament. Oh well.

Next game is against Tottenham. If Tottenham is still managed by Martin Jol or Juande Ramos, this game will be end to end attacking football. Like what Bedokian have say, we will love to have another scoreline of 5-3 if either one of them still manage Tottenham.

But Harry Redknapp? Harry have done us 3 times, all during FA Cup. First time he was manager of Bournemouth that knock us out in 1984, then proceed to managed West Ham where Paolo di Canio scored a goal where Fabian Barthez tried to bluff him for offside. And the last was Portsmouth. Who could have forgotten the rash act of Tomasz Kuszczak that got him sent off and the replacement goalie was Rio Ferdinand. Now manager of Tottenham, we have no idea whether the players will follow the achievement. We hope not. It's a 4th time jinx.

Anyway, after this game, we will be jetting off to the Land of Rising Sun for the World Club Cup. Hence im very doubtful about tonight match. The financial reward for winning the World Club Cup is only a buffer to clear their debt.

Tottenham Hotspur Team News: Alan Hutton and Giovani are out. Did Giovani play in the League yet?

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Wes Brown, Patrice Evra, Wayne Rooney are out.

Odd and Analysis: Though i hate to say this, the handicap is 0.75, but i really doubt Man Utd could clear it because of Redknapp factor and Man Utd's focus is in the World Club Cup. Stay away.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (13 Dec 2008)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United

Jaywalk/COOL will definitely write a piece in this coming Spurs-Man Utd clash, based on their viewpoint, so I will come out with this post, based from a Spurs fan's perspective.

Every Spurs fan will know (bitterly) that one of the greatest comebacks in Manchester United history was the game where we were 3 goals up but in the end lost 5-3. And, as one of the traditional "clash of the season" game between these two, it became virtually non-existent in the last 20 years of the league or so, mainly because Manchester United had gained in prominence whilst Spurs' form became inconsistent.

As for this Saturday's match-up, it would be yet another big hurdle for Spurs to climb further up the table (and away from the dreaded relegation zone). What's more, we might be "welcoming" back Berbatov, who had left Spurs early in the season. The good news is that Rooney will not be playing, but the bad news is so is Campbell (Frazier, of course). It would be up to the original squad led by Jenas to stave off United's chase to the top.

What would be the outcome? It's hard to say, since the odds are against us, but I promise it would not be like the 5-3 debacle.

Midweek Review (10 Dec 2008)

Manchester United vs Aalborg

"With both teams qualified for UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League knock-out stages, this fixture is really meaningless."
-Gary, 10/12/2008

Did i see the stats wrongly? 72% possession yet only yield one goal?!?! Either Sunderland defence suddenly looks good after the mauling by Bolton or Man Utd strikers left their boots at home literally.

After Roy Keane have left Sunderland, there are more people who are interested in the job rather than the current economy. Alan Curbishley, Sam Allardyace, Martin Jol, Gerard Houllier and even Avram Grant also put his name in the hat.

With both teams qualified for UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League knockout stages, this fixture is really meaningless. There is no pride to play for since Aalborg has qualified for UEFA Cup. Look like a friendly, warm-up match to me if both teams send 2nd team out to play.

Let's take a look at the potential opponents for the 2nd round: Inter-Milan, Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid, Porto, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Teams from the same countries or in the same group will not face each other in the knockout stages.

Man Utd Team News: Carlos Tevez and Paul Scholes are expected to play. Ronaldo is out with a hip injury during Sunderland match. Rooney is expected to sit out.

Aalborg Team News: Andreas Johansson is suspended.

Odds and analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap. Knockout stages secured, 2nd team is expected to take the field, with unbeaten run in the competition, there might be chances of a "Draw" in this game. Meaningless punt to me.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (8 Dec 2008)

West Ham United FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

Though Spurs are away in this game against West Ham, it is nevertheless considered half a home game, since the 2 clubs are near each other. There is this West Ham - Spurs rivalry going on, though this relationship is overshadowed by a much larger rivalry with the-club-that-must-not-be-named (ArseNAL).

After a win against Watford for one of the final 4 places in the League Cup, Spurs will deserve a rest till the coming Monday fixture against their east London rivals. The Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola is still trying to establish a regular stream for the Hammers, who were in an up-and-down form recently, though they had held on to a stalemate against Liverpool at Anfield in their last game.

Spurs needed points bad, lest they slip into the bottom 3 again, and the infamous "Christmas Crunch" is coming. A win in this game is crucial and an important step to climb back to mid-table.

Weekend Review (6 Dec 2008)

Manchester United vs Sunderland

"In the first place, why buy Berbatov?"
-Gary, 5 Dec 2008

With 4 teams left in the Carling Cup, there is a chance of a final between Tottenham and Man Utd.

I think the 4 goals demoilition by Tevez will make Fergie sit up and notice. In the first place, why buy Berbatov?

At the start of last season, critics say that Rooney and Tevez cannot play together because of same size and similiarilities in style. But when both of them play togther, they had telepathy understanding on the pitch, just like Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke in the 90s.

With Man Utd's first team have the same days of rest as Sunderland players, i think we are on an even playing field. I was surprised to see Paul Scholes back from injury and was given some playing time to get match fitness.

Sunderland is also another disappointing team. After managed to stay in the top flight last season, they are now in another relegation fight with Blackburn, West Brom, Newcastle, Tottenham and Manchester City. Last match against Bolton, the defence was horrendous. Time to buck up before the festive fixtures, if not, im forseeing another manager been sack in the new year. This was before Keane resigns, tsk. So Keane's track records is not that marvellous, prehaps he should try his hands in the lower league.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves and Wes Brown are still out.

Sunderland Team News: George McCartney, David Connolly and Darren Ward are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd give 2 ball handicap at 1.15. There are chances Man Utd might just score 2 goals. I will forgo it. No manager now, take Man Utd for the win.

Midweek Review (3 Dec 2008)

Manchester United vs Blackburn

"Everything about Ronaldo. Im tired."
-Gary, 3 Dec 2008

Ronaldo get sent off. Ronaldo get Ballon d'Or recipent since George Best in 1968. Ronaldo going to get the FIFA Footballer of the year. Everything about Ronaldo. Im tired.

Now the league table have taken shape and we see the familiar names in the Top 4. We are now 3rd, behind Chelsea by 5 points, Liverpool by 6 points. And we have one game in hand.

Now is December and it will be a mad-rush of games with Carling Cup, Premier League and the World Club Cup in Japan. With European Cup qualified to the knockout stages, Man Utd will send 2nd team to play in the meaningless fixture against Aalborg.

Tonight game against Blackburn. Doesnt look quite the same since Paul Ince took over. Now they are in the relegation zone fighting with Tottenham. Ok, i cant help it though Tottenham also lost over the weekend. Ngek ngek ngek.

Man Utd Team News: 2nd team is playing. Do i have to list out all the first 11?

Blackburn Team News: Vince Grella, David Dunn and Steven Reid are out with injuries. Keith Andrew are ineligible for the competition.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd giving a 1 ball handicap. Stay away even if Man Utd managed to nick the odd goal.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (3 December 2008)

Watford vs Spurs (Carling Cup, Quarterfinal )

Never, never discount the underdog!

Last night, 2 more Premier League teams fell by the wayside.  Stoke were stunned by a late penalty strike from Derby which put an end to their Carling Cup hopes.  Arsenal (or Ar5ena1 from last year's Semi-final) were 'burned' by Burnley 2-0, the same Burnley that calmly dispatched Chelsea in the previous round via a penalty shootout.  This leaves Spurs, Man United and Blackburn as the Premier League teams left in this competition.

This quarterfinal sees Harry Redknapp facing his brother-in-law, Frank Lampard Sr, on the field for the first time.  Ok, it is not a direct comparison since Lampard Sr is not the coach of Watford but a football consultant TO the coach.  But it is a notable fact nonetheless.  Watford coach, Brendan Rodgers will want to exact revenge on Spurs, as he was an assistant coach at Chelsea last season and hence was on the sidelines when Woodgate headed home our winner in extra time at the Final.

Spurs will probably continue to rest some starters as Redknapp is focused on the league position but he does love a trip to Wembley and the Final is very much in sight.  Let's hope our youngsters get it done tonight!
