Weekend Review - 24 April 2010

Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

This is one match that everyone is watching, including Chelsea fans.
-Gary, 24 Apr 2010

Man City is really hating us now for scoring yet another injury time goal. The rivalry will be heating up next season when we meet again. Thank you Tottenham for stopping Chelsea from running away with the title, and now need another help from Liverpool.

Now the title is officially 2 horse race where Arsenal lose to Wigan. Wigan lose all the matches to the Top 4 when they got promoted to the Premier League, but this season they won Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. Next time win Tottenham with 9 goals, please.

Today's match is win or nothing. Both clubs are aiming for a win to have a chance to win the title for the fourth time and to get into the elites of the European competition next season respectively. This is one match that everyone will be watching, including Chelsea fans.

Manchester United Team News: Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Anderson and Michael Owen are out.

Tottenham Team News: Niko Kranjcar, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon, Jonathan Woodgate and Carlo Cudicini are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. Tight match with another odd goal winner coming from Man Utd.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (24 April 2010)

  Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

The future is bright, the future is Lilywhite!

Spurs are overflowing with confidence after claiming the scalps of Arsenal and Chelsea last week at home. But let’s be realistic.  Winning at the Lane is easier than winning away from home.  And can we really do it against United when we’ve not won there since December 1989?  We had already lost there this season during the Carling Cup run where our first team was beaten a United team comprising youngsters and some starters.

I could continue to quote statistics of our past attempts to win at Old Trafford but the win over Arsenal has shown that history can be changed.  Add to that Fergie’s annoying psycho games of unsettling opposing players with visions of summer transfers right before major matches and you know this is a tough, tough Saturday for us.

Nevertheless, with the in-form Bale relishing a 90min battle with old man Neville, the return of iron man Palacios in the middle, and the potential availability of ‘azza, this match could turn out to be fantastically entertaining.  Again we must always look out for ex-Spurs players like Berbatoss (I mean Berbatov) and Carrick who could score against their old club.  The likes of Nani and Valencia will also keep our back 4 busy the entire day.

Yet, with United back in the title race, they will want a result from this so anything more than a draw for us is gravy quite frankly.

Results - Games 17 - 18 Apr 2010 EPL Prediction League 2009/2010

It's really tight at the top as the Top4 all scored 6 points and above.

Leader ihawk98 and Weimeng now top the Marksmen Board with 8 correct predictions apiece.

Granted that ihawk98's lead got cut once again and now it's down to 6 points, it may just be enough to hang on for the win as there are only 3 weekends left.

Again, it's time to standby the tie breaker, if at all, which would be the FA Cup final. Will explain the rules again when we get there.

Limyengchuan's prediction is accepted as there is a valid time stamp on SPUG. Good thinking!

p.s. Don't forget WorldCup 2010 Prediction League! Coming up soon!

Weekend Review - 17 Apr 2010

Manchester City vs Manchester United

"We request Tottenham for a big favour as what they did to Arsenal."
-Gary, 17 April 2010

4 games left, 4 points behind Chelsea. It was a game that Man Utd needed to win to close the gap but of all stages, Man Utd stumbled at the final round.

If Chelsea win Tottenham on Sunday, and Man Utd lose to Man City, Chelsea is virtually champions already.

Since Ronaldo left last season, Rooney step up to carry the baton and because of this, every one in the team is dependant on him. They relied on him so much that he is the only strike force in the team. Berbatov, Owen, Macheda and Diouf seem rather redundant. I wonder the transfer of Mexican striker, Javier Hernandez, is a replacement for Michael Owen.

This coming derby game is a must win in order to close the gap and hope Chelsea lose. We request Tottenham for a big favour as what they did to Arsenal. That is a big ask, as they are playing their 3rd game in a week.

Man City Team News: Adam Johnson, Wayne Bridge, Joleon Lescott, Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov are out.

Man Utd Team News: Wes Brown, Anderson and Michael Owen are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.25 handicap. I predict a draw.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (17 April 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea

Another toughie in the space of 3 days!

This is the second of 3 matches in a row where we play the top 3 teams in the league and Saturday’s tie with the current league leader is not going to be easy.  With Drogba leading the charge up front and Malouda coming into his own, Spurs will have their hands full dealing with the expected pressure.

Chelsea has not won at Spurs for the past 5 years.  But I’ll be honest.  I do not know if the lads have enough stamina in them to win this one.  One hundred and twenty minutes of FA Cup football followed by an energy sapping midweek win against the Gooners may start to take its toil on the players.  The good news is that ‘azza could be ready to play again and may be available as a sub.  Palacios is still out due to suspension and King’s knees cannot take 2 games straight.

This is another massive game for us and getting anything more than a point will be a fantastic result.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (15 April 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal

The return of “Judas”!

This WILL be a fiery game as all London derbies are.  And with Sol Campbell returning to the Lane, it will be even more so this time round.

Spurs will need to recover from the semi-final hangover and get their act together.  Losing Palacios and Kranjcar for this match is tough.  We’ll need to deal with the pace of Theo Walcott and rumors are that BAE will be switched to right back to handle that (Corluka is out).  Ledley King may return in the heart of defence but ‘azza is still out.  Will all the injuries woes we have, it will not be a surprise to see the younger lads on the field.

So the big question is, can the lads get it done? For me, I am hoping the chance to spoil their chances of a league championship is enough motivation for the boys to take the fight to the Gooners.

Results - Games 10 - 11 Apr 2010 EPL Prediction League 2009/2010

The season is most likely over as we have Chelsea now in the driver's seat with one point lead and a game in hand.

However, that's not the case over here as ihawk98 has dropped points for the second week straight allowing Limyengchuan to surge ahead of weimeng and hotdog whom both dropped points too to capture the second spot and 6 points behind.

With only 4 weekends left, will there be enough games to catch ihawk98?

Congrats also to Bedokian for his correct prediction to climb to the top spot of the Marksmen Board sharing the limelight with ihawk98 and weimeng.

p.s. Great news! We will be having the WorldCup 2010 Prediction League post season with a whopping 64-game tournament. So don't switch off this blog just yet when we are done with the EPL 2009/2010 season. Stay tuned!

Weekend Outlook (11 Apr 2010)

Blackburn Rovers vs Manchester United

"...Watch out Ancelotti, we'll steal the title when you blink..."
- JayWalk, 10 Apr 2010

A big hello to one and all as I take this weekend's preview after a long hiatus.

It was a bitter-sweet moment for ManUtd when we were eliminated from the ECL earlier in mid-week.

Those who have been following my posts would know that a quarter-final result in the ECL is good enough from a financial standpoint but of course it would be a bonus if we actually win it.

Yes, we are out of the competition but that frees us from the shackles of over-committing our limited resources.

That was exactly what happened when we were beaten by Chelsea right after being beaten by Bayern Munich in the first leg of the ECL quarter final earlier.

Now that we are left with the EPL, it's time to focus on the title chase which we stumbled last week to be overtaken by Chelsea by 2 points. Watch out Ancelotti, we'll steal the title when you blink.

JayWalk The Talk: Rooney is out again but I think he may be available for the last couple of games of the season to seal his place in the World Cup squad. What that means is that Berbatov will be restored up front as the predator while old guards like Scholes, Neville and Giggs are likely to support him from behind.

It was said that Hargreaves has finally shaken off his injury and has started featuring in B-games. Don't be surprised if we see his name on the starting line-up albeit as a substitute.

Wellbeck, Owen and Brown are likely to miss the rest of the season for their respective injuries.

On the Blackburn end, we are expect to miss Basturk and Jacobsen.

JayWalk The Walk: We have only 5 games to the end of the season and 2 points behind. We need to win all 5 games if we were to stand a chance at the title So regardless of who our opponents are, we are going to bulldoze them over. Bad news for ManCity and Spurs whom they are chasing the 4th and last spot into the ECL competition next season.

Bookies are giving Blackburn a 1-ball handicap and ManUtd a 1.90 decimal odds to over come it. Over/Under odds also currently favour a conservative scoreline as decimal odd of 1.90 was given to total number of goals to under 2.75.

At this time, the wagers are overwhelmingly skewed in favour of ManUtd at 90% vs Blackburn's 10%.

I say it's a 2-0 victory in favour of the Red Devils.

Disclaimer: The above views are purely my own two-cents' worth. In other words, I cannot and will not guarantee that my predictions are accurate. If you want to bet on the game, do so at your own risk. Also, please bet responsibly and within your means regardless of how "sure thing" that game may appear to be. As the old saying goes, "The Ball Is Round". Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (11 April 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Portsmouth FC
(FA Cup Semi-Finals)

These two sides had clashed just less than 2 weeks ago, when our boys had won the game like a stroll in the park. However, this time, it would not be Fratton Park nor White Hart Lane, but in Wembley Stadium.

Both sides are suffering from a tremendously long list of injured players, but Pompey seems to be getting the worse end, with Hreidarsson, Webber, Diop and Yebda out. Our on-loan boy O' Hara, though he would very much like to play against us, was to sit out of this game due to administrative reasons.

Some of our boys like Dawson, Huddlestone, Corluka, King and Jenas are trying to get fit for this game, so their appearances would be tentative at best. Also, Kaboul and Walker are cup-tied. Good thing is our striking (s)quad of Gudjohnsen, Defoe, Pavlyuchenko and Crouch are fully fit and ready.

Portsmouth, though beleaguered financially and on the playing field, would be taking this semi-final game very seriously.

And so will us, the traditional cup winners, too.

COYS!!!!!

Midweek Review - 7 Apr 2010

Manchester United vs Bayern Munich

"The season is over for Man Utd.."
-Gary, 7 Apr 2010

The season is over for Man Utd as they lost 2 important games in a row within a week. So far, no team have ever won the Premier League title 4 times consecutively.

Chelsea have everything to lose now with 2 point ahead of Man Utd and 3 points in front of Arsenal.

Interestingly, Tottenham will be facing these 3 teams in a row, in order to finish 4th and the last spot
for Champions League. A pretty tall order to go as they have other teams such as Man City, Aston Villa and Liverpool to fight for. Not only that, they also have FA Cup to go.

Tonight's match could be a do or die for Man Utd as they seek to score against Bayern Munich to qualify for the semi-final. However this season, Bayern have been doing well in their travels. The omen doesnt look good for Man Utd.

Man Utd Team News: Wayne Rooney, John O'Shea and Anderson are out of the tie.

Bayern Munich Team News: Arjen Robben and Daniel van Buyten are doubtful.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap. Avoid Man Utd.

A stumble at the top both in the EPL as well as the SPUG League. Fortunately for ihawk98, he still maintains a comfortable 6-points lead with only 5 more games to go.

I don't think ManUtd will be able regain the top spot unless Chelsea performs a miracle and trip over themselves.

We'll see.

Congrats to Weimeng who notch another one on the Marksmen Board to share the lead with ihawk98.

Well done!

Fixture Focus – Spurs (3 April 2010)

  Sunderland vs Tottenham Hotspur

What a time to be meeting a tricky fixture!

Sunderland have a great record at the Stadium of Light with a run of 7 unbeaten games at home.  But having won only 2 of their last 19 league fixtures, you would think that there’s nothing to worry about for Spurs right? Wrong!.

Sunderland are unbeaten against Spurs at home in their last 4 matches and ex-Spurs players like Malbranque and Darren Bent (especially the latter) will want to prove a point against their former team.

Spurs are boosted by the impending return of top scorer Jermaine Defoe and it will be interesting to see if he gets the starting nod over in-form strikers like Pavlyuchenko and Gudjohnsen.  Redknapp will no doubt rest Palacios as the danger of a 2 match suspension from another yellow card will mean he will miss the FA Cup semi-final next weekend.

With that said, the boys just need to concentrate and focus on this game.  I am cautiously hopeful that we will continue our string of good results.

Weekend Review - 3 April 2010

Manchester United vs Chelsea

"I believe someone, where Chelsea is unfamiliar with, like Federico Macheda or Mame Biram Diouf to win the game."
-Gary, 3 April 2010

It was a history that nearly repeated except that it was not the same team that score in the injury time.

We have a mountain to climb in the return leg at home with the loss of Wayne Rooney. The season is over for him but he can start preparing for the World Cup.

With a point seperating the top 2, it doesnt come a better time that Chelsea coming to Old Trafford with the campaign coming to an end.

This match will be tight as both of the teams have face each other no less than 6 times over the last 2 years. I believe someone, where Chelsea is unfamiliar with, like Federico Macheda or Mame Biram Diouf to win the game.

Man Utd Team News: Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Wes Brown, Micheal Owen, John O'Shea and Anderson are out.

Chelsea Team News: Ashley Cole, Henrique Hilario, Ricardo Carvalho, Branislav Ivanovic, Michel Essien and Jose Bosingwa are out.

Odds and Analysis: A level ball handicap. This match could end in a draw.
