Weekend Review - 2 Sep 2012

Southampton vs Manchester United

A nerve wrecking win against Fulham where a freak injury from Wayne Rooney caused him to miss football action for the next 2 months. Fergie benched him for a below par performance for the first match against Everton.

We saw home debut goals from Shiji Kagawa and RVP. It is a different strikeforce from what we have been thinking like Rooney and RVP. Fergie have alot of different combination which is refreshing to us and keep opponents guessing. Hopefully his thinkering dont disrupt the rhythm too much. At the time of writing, Berbatov is heading to Fulham. Well, is a pity to see him go when he scores more goals than Welbeck and Hernandez.

We will be visiting St Mary Stadium for the first time since 2005. Southampton, under the helm of Nigel Adkins, played possession football just like Barcelona, Liverpool and Wigan. It takes time to gel in a higher intensity league compared to lower tier football league. As what we have seen Southampton against Man City for the opening match, I would find it hard to label them as relegation strugglers.

Man Utd is giving 1.25 handicap. I believe Man Utd can score 2 clear goals and win the handicap.

Results - EPL Prediction 25 - 26 Aug 2012

You know times have changed when nobody predicted a Liverpool win. Not even Liverpool supporters themselves.

I was watching the match via a Chinese portal and there was a chatboard right next to the screen showing the matching. Everybody was screaming kelong (假球 - fake ball) when Tevez was gifted the equaliser.

It was a sad day for the great football club. It was an appalling display.

On a brighter note, Liverpool fan, Arrenn, continues to keep the flag flying by maintaining the lead and pulling ahead to a 4-point gap.

Congrats also for opening account on the Marksmen Board too.

Weekend Review - 25 Aug 2012

Manchester United vs Fulham

First game of the season and we lost! Man Utd lost to Everton! A game that we can win with the strike force around us. But defence wise, it was a big let down. No Rio Ferdinand, no Phil Jones and no Chris Smalling. We only have 2 recognised defenders who are Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra.

After the game, we sign another left back of Alexander Buttner. I have not heard of him or seen him play. And is also a transfer move that no one saw it coming. However there are reports stating that his penalty kicks and spot kicks are pretty deadly. Hopefully he put one over this weekend against Fulham.

Fulham, on a high after hitting 5 goals against Norwich. And they win the game easily without the influential Clint Dempsey. With Martin Jol at the helm, it wont be easy against them.

Until now, I still dont understand why Berbetov is not playing when he is much better than Welbeck. He was an unused sub for Everton game and I doubt he will be feature in Fulham match.

Man Utd is giving 1.5 handicap. Er, abit too high and no punt for me. Not a good sign for Man Utd.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 25 August 2012)

Tottenham Hotspur vs West Bromwich Albion

AVB will fully experience the spirit of White Hart Lane this weekend when we play our home opener for the season.

Squad changes are still afoot with players coming and going so predicting who will start is a crap shoot. I am expecting ABV to try his 4-3-3 formation after going with a 4-2-3-1 formation last weekend. Vertonghen will start as Kaboul is ruled out. Dawson could be on the bench as his move to QPR is still not finalized. Modric will not be seen for sure.

The high-line provides wonderful attacking football and Spurs have the squad for that. The problem is that we have been suspect to the lob or through ball coming via the middle and I would like to see this fixed quickly. This means the centre backs must play together consistently to develop a strong understanding of their positioning.

I am keen for AVB to make his mark and start us on the winning streak this weekend. Another loss and the naysayers will continue to come out of the woodwork which will not bode well for a new manager trying to win the hearts of fans.

Results - EPL Prediction 18 - 19 Aug 2012

Welcome one and all to the 9th season of the EPL Prediction League. I am very excited as we are one season away from reaching the milestone of 10 years.

Anyway, hope you like the new puar liaps I have for you this season. Haha.

Congrats to Arrenn for a flying start by being the only 6-pointer this weekend. It seems all of us with the exception of Arrenn had too high an expectation for QPR who boasted of Mark Hughes at the helm with big names like Park Ji Sun and Fabio. I guess all that didn't count shite.

On a brighter note, congrats to Everton and cool402 for being the firsts to open account on the Marksmen Board.

Cheers.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (18 Aug 2012)

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

After a period of long wait peppered with other sporting highlights such as Euro 2012 and the Olympics, the season is here again.

With a change of manager, players and possibly formation, it is hard to fathom what our style or even lineup would be. The new man in charge, Andre Villas-Boas (or AVB for short), may have something up his sleeve that his predecessor, Harry Redknapp, did not. We have our new signings Vertonghen and Sigurdsson but we are unsure if they will fit into play yet. AVB is famous for his high-line of defence, which worked wonders for his ex-ex-Club Porto but not Chelsea, but we are unsure whether he will continue with that. Two things for sure are that Parker is out, and Modric will probably be left out due to his impending departure from the club. In any way, my comments are reserved and I would prefer to let the opening game do its talking.

Newcastle United is probably set to emulate their past season's success with the same crop of players or if not, the same set of formation and style. However, there are some doubts to those players in Pardew's winning formula, with Cabaye, Ba and Cisse needing fitness tests.

We were fourth last season but missed out the lucrative Champions League due to our western London neighbours in blue. This time, with a new beginning (and manager, and players, etc.), let us make it possible again.

Midweek Review - 21 Aug 2012

Everton vs Manchester United

Welcome to another new season of the Barclays Premier League 2012/13! Time flies when we have the European Championships and the London Olympics during the off season.

And what a way to start this season when Man Utd bought Robin van Persie and a dream strike force with Wayne Rooney. Last season we are only a few seconds away from winning the title until Man City scored at the last kick of the game to snatch the title away from us.

Fergie have gone to the transfer market and bought Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund and Nick Powell from Crewe Alexandra. We also wish Park Ji-Sung all the best as he left for Queens Park Rangers. We wont get to see another player that can run for the whole of 90 minutes like Park Ji-Sung.

This new season, we welcome Southampton, Reading and West Ham back to the Premier League and without a doubt, they have to get it going at the first whistle.

First game of the season will be against Everton. Jack Rowell has gone to Man City and Tim Cahill had joined the US Major League. Kind of surprise that Everton has not dip into the transfer market for reinforcement. Looks a little lightweight to me at the moment.

Man Utd is giving 0.5 handicap for this match. They have to start fast if not, have to chase Man City again. Take Man Utd for the handicap and the winner for this match.
