Fixture Focus - Spurs (28 Sep 2013)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea FC

Another London derby, I would describe this as the "Battle of the Ex-es". The two teams' Portuguese managers, Mourinho and AVB, were ex-Porto managers, ex-Chelsea managers (theoretically for one of them) and ex-working partners in football management.

Though AVB had complained about the fixture squeeze, Spurs had churned out good results over the midweek against Aston Villa in the League Cup game with a slightly different lineup than that against Cardiff. In this Saturday early kickoff, a likely change would be the return of Rose to leftback after recovering from a toe injury. Also, Lennon would be going through a late fitness test to determine whether he will start.

Mourinho will be without Van Ginkel due to injury incurred in the midweek League Cup clash. With Mata and Torres played during the midweek, it is unlikely, though possible, that they may start against us this weekend.

An ex-plosive fixture between the ex-es.

Weekend Review - 28 Sep 2013

Manchester United vs West Brom

A hard fought win against Liverpool, but still not convinced due to the fact that Moyes make 8 changes from the Man City defeat. Have this nagging feeling that he will use back the first 11 for the coming weekend match against West Brom.

Before this match, Moyes admitted in an interview that he is not ready for this job. The effect of morale dropping isnt showing yet as those who played in the Liverpool match is in a way trying to prove Moyes wrong.

Man Utd is giving 1.5 handicap. That is a big one to clear which I doubt Man Utd can clear. No punt.

Midweek Review - 26 Sep 2013

Manchester United vs Liverpool

A heavy defeat against Manchester City, and second loss in the league leave us at 8th in the table. Though Jaywalk mentioned that he still holding faith in Moyes, I beg to differ.

  • No movement in transfer activity, only a last minute signing on deadline day
  • Stick with the same 11 without giving other players match fitness. Even though he did play Kagawa in the Champions League, he was not featured at all in the Premier League. If he still using the same 11 by Christmas, how can we last the whole season?
  • Moyes seem to be bringing Everton mentality to Manchester United. Players bought into Manchester United is to fight for every matches and gain maximum points. However, Moyes seem contend to fight for a draw, with the bite seem missing that we so used to it during Fergie era.
  • Gaining lots of possession but it doesnt translate to goals. One perfect example was the loss against Liverpool.
And i feel that we might exit earlier for the Capital One Cup under Liverpool. From the start when Moyes got the letter to become Man Utd manager, the faith is not even there. Not even my confidence in this season.

Man Utd is giving 0.25 handicap. Forget it.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (Capital One Cup, 25 September 2013)

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur
Just barely 48 hours after a tough victory over Cardiff City on Sunday evening, our boys travel to Villa Park to kick off our Capital One Cup campaign this season.
Paul Lambert has been forced to rest several players who have featured thus far in the Barclays Premier League, the likes of Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke, Fabian Delph and Antonio Luna all looking likely to miss out. But he assures the fans that they will go out and try to get a result.
It is the same for AVB.  “This is an impossible game for us to play, but hopefully our team spirit and motivation can get us through,” he said. “It (the Capital One Cup) is not our absolute number one priority but I don’t think we have been given a fair chance to play in this competition this year.
I honestly think that fringe players will feature as we do have to face Chelsea on Saturday. Expect Harry Kane to get a start and Holtby to feature as well. We should also see Vlad Chiriches in defence as well.
The quality is there for us to win this against a weakened Villa team.

Results - EPL Prediction 21 - 22 Sep 2013

It was a humbling defeat for us but I am still holding faith in David Moyes. After all, didn't Ferguson take 7 years to produce result? Ferguson inherited a team built by Ron Atkinson where he subsequently cleaned out the squad, getting rid of the likes of Whiteside and McGrath.

Now Moyes is faced with the same situation where he inherits the team left to him from Ferguson. It will take a while to rebuild a team that the manager can use the yield results. My minimum expectation is a champions league spot next season and that's is good enough for me. For now.

Back to the league. Congratulations to ianrush for his 6-point haul and a early break-away from the pack. Redherring didn well with his 6-points to leapfrog to 4th.

Good job.

Weekend Review - 22 Sep 2013

Manchester City vs Manchester United

A deserving win against Bayer Leverkusen gives Moyes a perfect debut to his Champions League campaign. Now we head straight to Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City who also won for the first time since debuting in the Champions League 2 years ago.

Now we are only 6 games old into the season and every week we are seeing at least 1 top team got defeated by lowly teams, which really makes the league unpredictable. Even in relegation zone, the last 3 teams would not last there more than a week, after which another 3 new teams will take over.

Man Utd is eating 0.25 handicap. I say take the handicap and win half the punt.

Fixture Focus–Spurs (EPL, 22 September 2013)

Cardiff City vs Tottenham Hotspur
The Bluebirds have shown that they can compete with the best. Victory over Manchester City and a draw against Everton suggest that they can take on the bigger clubs without fear.

Spurs have had a great start to the season. Having won 6 of our last 7 matches, the team is gelling nicely and have been stingy in defence so far. Vlad Chiriches has received his work permit and should be available to start in central defense , with Jan Vertonghen moving out left due to the injury to Danny Rose.

This could turn out to be an open attacking game with Lamela and Eriksen leading the charge in midfield. Given that both teams are in-form, a score draw would be acceptable.

Focus Fixture - Spurs (19 Sep 2013)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Tromsø Idrettslag
(Europa League Group Stage)

Our first Europa League group game will be at home turf against the Norwegian side Tromsø IL, whose homeground is situated within the Arctic Circle.

Other than Capoue, Chadli and Lennon out due to injuries, AVB would have a variety of players to choose from for this game, since the squad was boosted with new purchases during the transfer window.

Tromsø came through a long way to reach this phase of the competition. Though finished 4th in the Tippeligaen (Norwegian Premier League) last season, they have been struggling this season and in danger of relegation (note: the Norwegian Premier League season lasts from March to November).

Spurs are the favourites to win this, although Tromsø had just won the Tippeligaen leader Rosenborg over the weekend and might carry that winning momentum to WHL.

Midweek Review - 18 Sep 2013

Manchester United vs Bayer Leverkusen

Weekend win against Crystal Palace was unconvincing and Moyes is just replicating Fergie's tried and tested method by fielding the strongest 11 for the match, with no sight of Kagawa.

The upcoming match against Bayer Leverkusen will be David Moye's virgin Champions League tournament proper. No one knows how he will fare, but one suspects that he might see Fergie's advice.

Sami Hypia is the current manager of Bayer Leverkusen and has done well in the current domestic campaign. Hopefully Moyes could get a winning start in his virgin match.

Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap. No punt since is still in the early stage of the campaign.

Weekend Review - 14 Sep 2013

Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

Back from international break and we resume our domestic league. We will have Crystal Palace visiting us as we need to win to catch with the surprise team at the top, Liverpool.

Crystal Palace got promoted with the help of one of our Academy bred - Wilfried Zaha. And they are hoping to stay in the Premier League on the long term basis.

Man Utd is giving 2 balls. Not going to test water, no punt for Man Utd at the moment.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (14 Sep 2013)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Norwich City FC

After a week of international games, the EPL is now back on track. With an unconvincing defeat to our neighbours away, we will be hoping that our boys will start our winning engines running again, starting with the home game against Norwich.

News of Adebayor being "reassigned" to the reserves meant that he is likely not starting in the lineup. Capoue is out due to the horrendous (but not so serious) injury sustained at Arsenal. Besides these, AVB has a full squad to choose from for this weekend, though the upcoming Europa game will be on his mind.

Ex-Spurs Hughton has no injury trouble in his squad, so very likely Norwich will assemble the full first team on the team bus to WHL.

Congrats to ianrush for being one of two 6-pointers (congrats to edwinsng too!) and an ascend right to the top of the table.

It is still early in the season and the top is still pretty tight as we have yet to see anyone starting to break away.

No one on the Marksmen Board this weekend.
