Fixture Focus – Spurs (Champions League, 29 September 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs FC Twente    FC Twente

A historic tie to close out September 2010.  This is exactly what it is.  Our first Champions League group match at the Lane!

Group A is wide open with all 4 teams all square on points and goals scored and against so it is no surprise that Harry has openly stated we need to go on the attack for this home game.  And I hope we can produce the goals given that Defoe is still out injured and Crouch the likely lone striker.  I am sure we will lean on the experience of Rafael van der Vaart once again with support from Lennon, Bale and Modric in the middle.

The big concern is that we have only 1 fit center back in Bassong.  If King cannot start, then either Corluka or Huddlestone will partner Bassong and this does not inspire too much confidence for me.  We might leak goals at the back again.

But I am quietly confident that the home crowd can be our 12th man and hence look forward to us coming away with a win tonight.

Midweek Outlook (29 Sep 2010)

   Valencia vs Manchester United

This is possibly the toughest fixture for ManUtd as far as Round 1 of the European campaign in concerned and what worse timing than now when ManUtd is sputtering on all cylinders.

The good news is that once this is over, it is smooth road all the way. We can pick up the rest of the points along the way and qualify. Still, I rather take the 3-points here and have an easier path to the finishing line hereafter.

Bookies are rating this game as a Level-Ball game but decimal odds points in favour of Valencia at 1.84 on account of ManUtd's recent lousy form and Valencia's home ground advantage.

Valencia does not hold the key as far as outcome of this game is concerned. ManUtd does. Problem with ManUtd is that they leak too many goals at the back. Defense is really a big problem. We were trailing Bolton twice. We couldn't get past Fulham and even Scunthorpe managed to put 2 goals into our net. Scunthorpe leh!!!! Scunthorpe!!! 2 goals!!! Not 1. 2!!!! How the fuck that happened?

Valencia (our player) is out. Giggs and Rooney both cannot make it (as in unable to feature. Not CMI). So I expect Scholes (and maybe Carrick) to command the centre, supporting Owen and Bubba. I hope to see Macheda getting some play time too.

Now some may say that Valencia is not to be taken lightly for after all, they are leading the La Liga right now ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid. Let me scatter the smokescreen for you.

Have you seen who they have played in their last 5 La Liga fixtures? Atletico Madrid, Santander, Gijon, Hercules and Malaga. With the exception of Atletico Madrid which ended in a draw, the rest are all weak teams and I would expect nothing than 3 points from all these hollow victories. So naturally, they are top of the table. For now.

Yah lah. Yah lah... we drew cellar team Everton lah. Bleh!

Mark my words. Without David Villa and David Silva, Valencia isn't as fantastic as they currently appear to be. I don't foresee them finishing in the Top 4 this season. In fact, there are in real danger of doing a Leeds United selling top players in lieu of mounting debt. It would be a vicious cycle as cashflow diminishes as a result of poor results, as a result of losing star players, as a result of cashflow diminishing.

The 4-0 thumping of Bursaspor? That is just a mirage. ECL virgins confirm must pay school fees one. No?

Form-wise, Valencia does not fare to well on the ECL front. Their last victory at home playing an ECL fixture was way back in 2006 when they beat Olympiakos 2-1.

As I have mentioned earlier, bookies are favouring Valencia. However, majority of the punters disagree as 67% of the buy-ins are ManUtd at Level-Ball.

Yes, we really messed up the start of our season and so whether I like it or not, I think this game will end up a goal-less draw like we did when we played away to them back in 2000 and 2001.

Still with a decimal odds of 2.14, I say perhaps a small wager on ManUtd and take advantage of the good odds. I mean how often do you see ManUtd having odds above 2.00?

Weekend Review - 26 Sep 2010

Bolton Wanderers vs Manchester United

"London Bridge is falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady."
-Gary, 26 Sep 2010

London Bridge is falling down, falling down. London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady. In one week, all 3 teams in London suffer losses in Carling Cup and Premier League. Triple ouch.

Our next opponents for Carling Cup will be Wolves. From the match stats, Scunthorpe seem to be more hype up and actually match against Man Utd.

We also get to see the unknown quality that Man Utd have sign, and I have to admit is a raw diamond waiting to be polish. Bebe was introduced as a sub in 74th min. For the next 16 mins, no one would have known he is playing for 3rd tier football in Portugal. Once his fitness level reach to the Premier League standard, Fergie will be ready to unleash him.

Bolton, currently managed by Owen Coyle. His track record against us is 1 win and 1 loss. The only win was when Burnley won 1-0 at home last season. After he switch to Bolton, it was a transition change, hence Bolton lose 4-0 to Man Utd. Another bogey trap for Man Utd?!

Bolton Team News: Andrew O'Brien, Gary Cahill, Joey O'Brien and Sean Davis are out.

Man Utd Team News: Antonio Valencia, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.25 ball handicap. I have a feeling Man Utd will drop points just like Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham. No punt.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (25 Sep 2010)

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur

After being unceremoniously kicked out of the League Cup by another group of youngsters from our neighbourhood, we are now back onto the EPL and CL this week. The past weekend had saw our 4th spot rival Manchester City overtook us by just goal difference.

On the other end of the table, West Ham are still struggling to find their first win of the season after 5 games played. Grant would definitely want to find a big team of an example to show that they could still stay among the football elite.

Today's squad would most likely feature the regulars that played in the last weekend game against Wolves, with King and Assou Ekotto doubtful. Defoe ad Gomes are still out till at least next month.

We would really have to get ourselves ready for the crunch that is coming up, and to prove our critics (who are always there) wrong by shining in both prestigious leagues.

Midweek Outlook (22 Sep 2010)

   Scunthorpe United vs Manchester United

I am not sure if this match even deserves a preview on two counts.

Firstly, it's Scunthorpe United against Manchester United. Do you seriously think that there will be an upset? Yes granted back in 1984 when we were unceremoniously dumped 0-2 by Bournemouth out of the FA Cup, I doubt this would be the team to pull a scalp. So why even bother to preview it?

Scunthorpe first came to my attention when they were drawn to host Chelsea in the FA Cup tournament back in 2005 The then-League 2 outfit lost 1-3 to Chelsea that day but it was not without a good fight (they took the lead!) that gave me a good impression of them. 5 years later, they made their way into the Championship League and currently hovering in mid-table in the sophomore year in the second-tier. I'd have to say that despite their higher position in the leagues, I still prefer the team that played Chelsea that memorable year. Last season, they got thrashed 2-4 and 1-5 by our neighbours, ManCity in the Carling Cup and FA Cup respectively. Most unfortunate for them to meet the same team in both competitions. But the biggest insult was that they rolled over too easily unlike the audacious fighting spirit that they had back in 2005. So yeah, the big flattering scoreline wasn't because ManCity were that good. *wriggles pinkie*

Secondly, it's the Carling Cup that Fergie doesn't take very seriously. FA Cup is slightly ahead of the present League / Littlewoods / Coca Cola / Rumbelows / Milk / Worthington / Carling / Dunnowhatfucknamenext Cup, in the Fergie Attention Span department, only because the trophy is prettier.

Ok. Enough of the Carling Cup match-up. I will come back to it later.

Let's talk about something more interesting. ManUtd 3-2 Liverpool. Now that's something more newsworthy. We were all over the Reds from the get GO. It was so bad that I lament the lost of a once-worthy rival.

Oh how the mighty has fallen to mediocrity in just a span of two years. Reminds me of Aston Villa who were champions of Europe during their heydays and then a blanket of 18 years in oblivion. Glad to see the Villains back in Europe.

The consolation, for Liverpool, is perhaps that it could have been worse, Liverpool could become the next Newcastle or lagi worse, Leeds United.

I blame Gerard Houllier for Liverpool's downfall although some say it's Graeme Souness who should be held responsible. Benitez actually did a pretty decent job with trophies to show for but it's time for his inevitable exit as he has more or less run out of ideas what to do with this time to keep them motivated.

So. We won 3-2 courtesy of a Bulgarian hat trick. Could this be the turning point for ManUtd after a dismal season last and an equally pathetic start of the season thus far? Would this be the final awakening of Dimitar Lazy-Ass Berbatov? Are we going to be seeing positive ROIs on our Bulgarian like we did Carrick? Mind you, we have yet to win an away match this season. Would this be the account opener?

Coming back, I doubt if it is of anyone's interest to know who is fit or available for the Scunthorpe line-up. All I know, as far as they are concerned, is that they don't have a proper manager in charge yet.

From our end, Owen, Anderson, Scholes, Bebe and maybe even Ferdinand and Hernandez should be featuring today. Hargreaves, whom we heard is close to full recovery, remains unlikely as Fergie is taking his time not to rush him and risking another big injury. Owen Hargreaves has got to be the only player, in ManUtd history, to have spend more time in the sick bay than on the pitch. I heard the insurance companies all don't want to insure him already.

You neighbourhood bookie should be giving you 1.25 ball handicap to take Scunthrope and even throw in a 2.025 decimal odds to sink your money. Still, punters by the margin of 85% : 15% are still the wiser to pick ManUtd.

I say while ManUtd will not be featuring their Best XI, I doubt if there will be an upset. Heck, I'd even doubt if Scunthorpe can score in the Theatre of Dreams.

"Sir Alex Ferguson  insists he will continue to use the Carling Cup as an opportunity to give his Manchester United fringe and youth players some match time, and believes that whether they win or lose at Scunthorpe on Wednesday, the experience will still be a valuable one." - Soccernet 22 Sep 2010.

But the key word here "or lose" suggests that it will be a modest 2-0 victory for the visitors, I say.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (Carling Cup 3rd Round, 21 September 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal arsenal

The last 2 matches that Spurs played against Arsenal at 2.40am in the morning, we ended up victorious for both matches.  So will we make it 3 in a row?

Arsenal should continue with their intentions to field their “kids” for Carling Cup matches.  So expect many of the big names to be rested.  Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, Johan Djourou, Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs are all set to feature having been unused substitutes at Sunderland, but youngsters Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Benik Afobe, Chuks Aneke and Henri Lansbury are also likely to be involved.  Midfielder Alex Song will serve his one-match suspension following his red card on Saturday, but the Gunners do not yet know how long captain Cesc Fabregas will be out for with a hamstring problem.

With West Ham looming next weekend and then another Champions League game in midweek, Harry will field a vastly different side for the Carling Cup.  Stipe Pletikosa will start in goal and Hutton will get a nod for right back as Corluka and Kaboul are out.  We will get to see Sandro Ranieri make his debut in midfield as the likes of Lennon, Bale, Huddlestone and Modric will be rested.  While it would seem like we are fielding a reserve team, I am excited to see what Sandro brings to the table.

Weekend Review - 19 Sep 2010

Manchester United vs Liverpool

"Both teams did not put their first 11 for their midweek European matches, an indication that both regard this match as highly important."
-Gary, 19 Sep 2010

When I first saw the lineup, for a moment I thought the match was Carling Cup or against lower league opponents. But Rangers? Fergie really underestimated them that he make 10 changes to the team that drew with Everton. 2 drew matches in a week is not a typical Man Utd you see in these days.

I dont think a crisis is forming, neither is Fergie pressing the red button yet but rather with the freak injuries to Valencia, and with Rooney hitting more girls than the ball in the net, we relied too much on midfield where players are at the both end of the playing career. Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are unable to play forever, and with Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung, Nani, they do not have the experience of playing for the team on a regular basis. Although much has been lauded about Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and the unknown Bebe, the trio are untested on the big stage yet. And is a worrying time ahead for the current team.

Liverpool, under Roy Hodgson, with only 1 loss at the moment, are slowly getting some decent results although everyone is hoping for a sale that investors can bring Liverpool back to the elites.

Both teams did not put their first 11 for their midweek European matches, an indication that both regard this match as highly important. One is to catch Chelsea, the other will be moving up the league table and chase for the coveted 4th place for Champions League next season.

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick are out.

Liverpool Team News: Fabio Aurelio and Dirk Kuyt are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap. The handicap is too high that seem to underestimated Liverpool. I avoid and will go for a draw.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (18 Sep 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Painful memories flooded in when I was writing this piece, for last season, we had lost to Mick McCarthy's men 1-0 in both league games.

And after our (going to be a common occurence in the future) Champions League midweek game, we are now back down to Earth to face our domestic league. For the past 4 games, we had only achieved a total of just 5 points out of a possible 12.

Spurs would be starting this game with the selection of players available from the past 2 games, with our last-minute signing van der Vaart trying to recover from a calf strain sustained during the clash with Werder Bremen.

And Wolves, with their recent display as being a very "physical" side, would want to relish another victory against us, especially so since we are officially labelled as one of the top 4.

We will prevail, and we will win games.

Midweek Outlook (14 Sep 2010)

   Manchester United vs Glasgow Rangers

Hello everybody. It's great to be back doing reviews after a rather lengthy hiatus. As you may have noticed, cool402 and I have switched places where he will be handling the weekend matches i.e. mainly Premier League games while I will be taking on the less taxing midweek fixtures that would focus primarily the Europe and domestic cups campaigns. And of course the odd EPL game here and there.

We open our European campaign facing Glasgow Rangers whom I foresee the later as the canon fodder of the group. Despite the inclusion of ECL virgin, Bursaspor of Turkey, I predict the Turkish debutant to finish ahead of Rangers on account of the fact that Scottish football is no longer as strong as it used to be and any team that can finish ahead of Turkish strong houses like Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahce, last season is definitely worth sitting up and pay attention.

Coming back to the game on hand, I see ManUtd open their campaign with a victory. ManUtd has always been slow to kick off their domestic campaign (which may end up costing them the title *facepalm*) but when it comes to the ECL, it has always been a roaring steam train from the get go.

If you look at past seasons, ManUtd has always been the first to chalk up 9 points and getting our balls all twisted when it comes to the final 1 point, to 10, and qualify mathematically. So ManUtd to start off the campaign with 3 points? You bet!

Rooney and Valencia have all been rested during the weekend ahead of the game while Ferdinand will be partnering Vidic behind. Looks like it's going to be goals, goals, goals and a clean sheet to boot.

Bookies are making ManUtd to give a 2-goal handicap (can I get a "walau!!" ?) with a decimal odds of 2.025 to beat it. Still, punters are cautiously optimistic putting their 68% of their wagers on ManUtd to beat it.

The way I see it, a home victory is a given and if we win by only one goal, I will consider Rangers heading back home with a victory, albeit zero point.

I predict ManUtd winning comfortably with a 2-goal margin but all eyes will be hoping for that third goal to bring home the kitty.

Go for ManUtd and give the 2-goal handicap

Fixture Focus – Spurs (Champions League, 14 September 2010)

 werderWerder Bremen vs Tottenham Hotspur

This is it!

Long suffering Spurs fans have waited patiently these past 4 months for this very moment.  Spurs are finally, deservingly in Europe’s premier club competition!  This is where the best of the best duke it out for bragging rights as the best club in Europe.

Werder Bremen are no strangers to Champions League football and have been involved in six of the last 7 seasons.  Having had a similar start to their season as Spurs, Werder find themselves in mid table in the Bundesliga in the 10th spot.  Yet, their previous experience in Champions League football will put them at a slight advantage for this match.

Spurs are also having an unimpressive start to the season and injuries to key players are not helping.  Spurs will undoubtedly deploy a 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1 (whichever way you see it) formation but which players will start is a good question.  My guess is that ‘arry will field all players with Champions League experience and so we should see Gallas partnering King in defence, Crouch alone up front, and Rafael van der vaart sitting in between the midfield and Crouch.  An attacking midfield should also consist of Bale, Modric, Huddlestone and Lennon but if we want to be conservative, Bale will play at left back and Palacios will play in midfield.

Whichever way, I have to believe that with injuries to key players, a draw will be a great result.  A winning start would be wonderful though.

Weekend Review - 11 Sep 2010

Everton vs Manchester United

"Footballers are role models to follow as kids, youths follow their soccer skills and movement on the pitch, and on television."
-Gary, 11 Sep 2010

Did anyone watch this game? West Ham was pathetic. The New Paper's review of the match was a true testament of the way West Ham play. They allow Berbatov to score that kind of goal and make Berbatov a justified signing overnight. West Ham previous game against Bolton, they allow Johan Elmander to score twice.

Now they are bottom of the table and will be in relegation battle once again this season. Their next 3 fixtures consist of Chelsea, Stoke and Tottenham.

Wayne Rooney got into the headlines for the wrong reasons these few weeks and it's the same sort of scandal that got Tiger Woods, Ashley Cole and John Terry into trouble. Footballers are role models to follow as kids, youths follow their soccer skills and movement on the pitch, and on television. The perfect examples will be Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, from the start of their career and now to their twilight, they have not gotten any scandals of any sort.

Everton Team News: Jack Rodwell, Phil Neville, Louis Saha, Ayegbeni Yakubu and Victor Anichebe are out

Man Utd Team News: Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.5 handicap. Last time Man Utd play at Goodison Park, they lose 3-1. And to think that ihawk98 choose this match for the Prediction League. I will avoid this match as Man Utd away form is 1 draw this season and is against Fulham.

Fixture Focus – Spurs (EPL, 11 September 2010)

wba  West Bromwich Albion vs Tottenham Hotspur

The international break has been a bitter sweet experience for Spurs fans.  It was great to see Defoe get goals against Bulgaria and also Dawson getting an international cap.  But both players also ended up injured from the matches and are sidelined for at least 6 – 8 weeks.  So what’s the outlook for this weekend’s Premier League encounter?

With injuries in several positions, the following players should debut for Spurs this weekend.  Gomes is still out and Cudicini is doubtful so Croatian Stipe Pletikosa could start.  With awesome Dawson out, Gallas will take his place while Rafael van der Vaart is sure to start in midfield.  Up front, we probably will play Keane and Pavlyuchenko as Crouch is carrying a back injury as well.

From a stats viewpoint, a match between West Brom and Spurs has ended in a draw only 9 times out of the last 57 encounters.  Yet, with an eye on our first Champions League group match the following week, and the injuries we have, a draw could very well happen.  Nevertheless, we must bounce back from the disappointing loss to Wigan and earn wins from matches such as these.
