Manchester United vs Arsenal

It's deja vu again. Cast your mind back to 29 Sep 2001. Tottenham score 3 goals in the first half and Man Utd roared back to score 5 goals in the second half.

Fast forward to 25 April 2009. Spurs score 2 in the first half and Man Utd roared back to score 5 goals in the second half. History indeed repeats itself.

Now we welcome another London team to Old Trafford which is Arsenal. To get into the semi-final stage after disposing Villarreal and AS Roma doesnt really make us sit up compared to whom we faced Inter Milan and Porto. This show that the gulf in English Premier League to other European leagues are widening.

Currently no team in the Champions League have ever defend their title before. And Fergie is hoping to make history.

Man Utd Team News: Only Gary Neville is out of the tie.

Arsenal Team News: Kieran Gibbs, Mikael Silvestre, Robin van Persie, Gael Clichy, William Gallas and Thomas Rosicky are out. Andrey Arshavin is ineligible.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.5. Man Utd is still unbeaten in this competition since 2007. Kind of repeating myself everytime doing up a preview. I would take Man Utd a 1-0 slim victory.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (25 April 2009)

Manchester United vs Spurs

On the weekend where continued news links Mr Posh Spice (and ex Red Devil) and Spurs as his MLS off-season workout club, a juicy match up await us at Old Trafford which could turn out to be a fun match to watch for the neutral fan.

Forget what managers say in the press.  Honestly, Spurs fans do not like Alex "Rudolph the red nose" Ferguson and tapping up Berbatov when he was still a Spurs player did not help things.  We were all smirking when Berbatov took that hilarious penalty kick against Everton. 

I can assure you that Spurs will do all we can and continue to play "spoiler" to teams involved in the EPL championship race.  With the form that we have been in, I fancy that we'll be able to get a result at Old Trafford with a draw highly likely. But it would be gravy if we come away with all 3 points too.

Weekend Outlook (26 Apr 2009)

They have 5 while we have 6 games to go and 3 points ahead. Looks like we are heading for the record tying of 18 league titles.

Still, we are always known to be shooting ourselves in the foot just before crossing the finishing line. There has been several scares in the past but so far other then the Leeds and Blackburn fumbles there isn't many.

Last game against Portsmouth was good. Looking at the statistics, they never had a chance against us. Pompey without Redknapp just isn't the same anymore.

Portsmouth are dumb to let Redknapp slipped away after the manager has done so much for them.

Looking ahead, we will be facing two consecutive London clubs at home. Spurs today and then Arsenal for the 1st leg of the ECL semi-finals. It's not going to be easy although mathematically speaking, we only need 13 points from the last 6 games to clinch the title, a rate that hardly poses any problems for us given our past records.

JayWalk The Talk: Everybody is talking about it. The problem we are having with our right back. Neville is out of actions again and so we probably have Rafael, Brown and possibly O'Shea covering that area.

Everybody is anticipating a standing ovation for Giggs as he makes his 800th appearance for ManUtd. I doubt Fergie will let him run unto the pitch today for I think the Gaffer will rest him against Arsenal, a club which Giggs is particularly apt at taking them apart.

Anyone remember the 1999 FA Cup Semi-Final where Giggs ran past 5 Gunners to score? See it here!

JayWalk The Walk: On paper, we are going take 3 points from this game, given that Spurs really suck monkey balls whenever they are at Old Trafford. Bookies says ManUtd has 1.875 decimal odds to beat the 1-ball handicap and punters' wagers are 62% on ManUtd to win by more than 1 goal.

The theory is that ManUtd will win coz if:

1. Liverpool wins today, we will be fired up to restore our lead by winning hours after.
   
   or
   
   
2. Liverpool screws up today, we will be fired up to take advantage of this opportunity to pull further away and sew up the title earlier than expected. If Liverpool draws and we win, then we only need 7 points from our last 5 games to lift the trophy. Sound too easy isn't it?
   

Personally, I don't have a good feeling about this game as I think the game thereafter against Arsenal is going to distract us lots, given Fergie's obsession with the ECL.

Do not underestimate the genius of Redknapp, one of the managers that Fergie has come to respect as a formidable opponent.

I think this game will end up in a draw and the title race heats up to attract more TV ratings which essentially translates to more money.

Them greedy corporate bastards.

Manchester United vs Portsmouth

When i first saw the starting line-up, i was preparing for the worst. Fergie was true to his words in sending out 2nd team to face Everton.

It was a matter of priorities where Fergie have to make a sacrifice. Now Man Utd have a breather and able to concentrate on the Premier League title and European Cup.

On the other hand, Man Utd youngsters able to hold Everton for 120 minutes. Not bad, and kudos to them.

We face Portsmouth in one of the games in hand. The other game in hand is against Wigan. Portsmouth has been veering clear out of the relegation spots under the guidance of interim manager, Paul Hart. Since Tony Adams has been sacked, no permanent appointment has been made yet. Same like Newcastle where portege Alan Shearer makes a return to manage Newcastle, but is sinking quick in the relegation battle. I have a feeling Newcastle is going to do a Leeds United soon.

Man Utd Team News: Fergie wouldnt want to let slip of the Premier League title, hence i think majority of the First team will be back, including Rooney, Ronaldo, Van der Sar, Giggs and Carrick.

Portsmouth Team News: Papa Bouba Diop, Sean Davis, Jerome Thomas and Jamie Ashdown are unavailable.

Odds and Analysis: If Portsmouth is still managed by Harry Redknapp, i doubt Man Utd is able to clear the handicap, less even a win. Since Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap, and with majority of the First team is back in contention, I expect Man Utd to send Portsmouth to the slaughter house.

Just a little explanation to do with regards to the deleted comment in the prediction posts.

I placed a last minute prediction at 21:56 on Saturday, just mere minutes prior to the 22:00 kick off. It was deleted by accident thinking that I did not make the whistle.

As it turned out, I did make the starting whistle and lost 4 points had I not tinkle with it.

Manchester United vs Everton

If there is one word to describe ManUtd now and it probably would be "grit".

We were in trouble a week ago letting two precious away goals into our own net, leaving us with no choice but only a win in the return if we wish to continue this campaign.

Something of a colossal task considering no English club has ever won on Porto's home soil.

Guess what? We did exactly that.

Granted they were the more aggressive side, we had more possession and put that 1 ball into the net where it counts.

1-0.

We made Porto history and we are through to the semi-finals.

Looking ahead, we have two league games following today's FA Cup semi-finals against Everton.

Time to make that ultimate sacrifice perhaps? To me it is pure naive to dream of chasing the Quintuple. It reeks of pure arrogance and especially disrespect for the smaller clubs who are no less formidable.

Had this been Scotland then yes, maybe. But certainly not England where the lowliest club in the league table can wipe you on the floor when you are not careful. Just ask Liverpool about Bradford City.

JayWalk The Talk: So anyway, Fergie has openly declared a second team for today resting Van dar Sar, Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Carrick and even Berbatov, although the striker may be slotted in later to get a bit of match fitness.

Still, we are still pretty strong with Neville, Rafael, Ferdinand and Vidic remain in the back room and Tevez up front and possibly with Rooney and Berbatov sharing the other striker spot. I don't think Federico "Of The Month" Macheda will be featuring as much as we would love to. The middle should be the familiar second-team of Park, Nani, and Anderson.

On the Everton end, they are slightly lacking in fire power with Jo cup tied with Yobo and Vaughan just back from injuries.

JayWalk The Walk: Bookies are thinking of a ManUtd win as the Red Devils are traditionally very strong in the semi-finals. Somehow the gods always smile on them at this stage. So for them, it's always exit before the Quarter-Finals or exit at the Finals either as winners or runner-up. Just never at Semi-Finals stage.

The handicap of 0.75-ball at 2.05 to beat it is indicative of a slim Red Devil win but high risk possibility of a draw. However the punter public seem to see otherwise with the wager pot at 80% in favour of ManUtd booking their ticket to Wembley in 90 minutes.

I say give Moyes the due respect as one of the up and coming great managers like Fergie endorsed him.

It will be a hard earned 1-0 victory as we win the half pot at the final whistle.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (19 April 2009)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United

The Magpies would be coming down to London - once their boogey place, to face ours truly Tottenham Hotspur at the Lane. The Toon Army needed a big boost up along the table to ensure survival, while Spurs also needed more points in order to cement "mathematical chance" of either going back to Europe and/or rid itself from that "relative possibility" of a relegation.

Newcastle would be playing with almost the full squad, with even Martins, who is not really fit, playing in upon the request of the Newcastle venerable Alan Shearer. And Viduka would be back. 

Spurs may see the comeback of Defoe after his long injury spell, plus Palacios from his suspension. However, Jenas and Pavlyuchenko may be doubtful.

This is a game touted to be the "make or break" for Shearer (in fact, for the remaining 5 games after this one). But being professional footballers, and quoting from the Godfather:

"It's not personal, it's strictly business"

So Federico Macheda rescued us once again. And now we are back to our 1-goal-game victory again.

Coming back to Porto game, we have to win in order to qualify for the semi-final. And Man Utd have to be the first English club to do so.

A tall order to call, even though Man Utd are unbeaten in the competition since 2007. Even a nil-nil draw will also kick Man Utd out to concentrate on FA Cup and Premier League.

Man Utd Team News: Rio Ferdinand is on a late fitness test. Edwin van der Sar will be back between the sticks.

Looks like we heading down to the wire with 6 games to go and yet no clear cut leader in the league as this point.

Kudos to everton's solitary point in the goal bonus to enable him to tie first place with weiming.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (11 April 2009)

Spurs vs West Ham

Aside from losing our concentration last week near the end of the Blackburn match, Spurs have had a tremendous league run recently that have seen us cementing our spot in mid table.  West Ham are currently in 7th position and looking like strong candidates for European football next season.  So with this in mind, I am expecting an open game for both teams to play flowing football.

Defoe is out for another week which means the Hammers will have to content with the likes of Keane and Pavlyuchenko in the front.  We will miss the services of Palacios in the midfield as his presence did give our midfield a bit of steel in recent games (and hence our solid string of results that included wins against Villa and Chelsea).  This worries me a tad as the Hammers do have spirited midfielders that join in the attack like Mark Noble.

Yet with Gomes in great form lately, I will look forward to a home win for us tonight.

Weekend Outlook (11 Apr 2009)

I saw the last goal against Aston Villa last week and I was in awe.

It was so beautiful I peed my pants. Macheda is a keeper!

Move aside Ronaldo! We may have a new Cantona on our hands!

So anyway, this is about the time we need to rekindle the fire in the belly. We were jaded in recent weeks and were made to pay dearly.

Back-to-back league defeats and leaking 10 goals in the last 5 games is really worrisome. We have the strength and skill to beat any team in the world but we just don't have the sharpness for the kill. Why? Why? Some one tell me why!!

We are in trouble for leaking 2 away goal at Old Trafford to Porto. We need to win the return leg in Portugal to qualify as we essentially killed off the option for the away draw to advance. Problem is that English clubs have a very very poor record against Porto on their own soil.

Siao Liao.

JayWalk The Talk: Rooney should still feature despite rib injury. Cause for a bit of concern as I wonder if it is so dire that we can't afford to rest him?

Not sure if Van dar Sar will be rested ahead of the return leg and feature Foster as today's goalie?

Ferdinand is sorely missed as 3 of the last 4 goals were conceded via an unmarked player in the 6-yard box from crosses. We cannot afford such defensive lapses. Evans is also not available and so I think we will see O'Shea starting at the back also.

JayWalk The Walk: Despite home ground advantage, Sunderland still get a 1-ball handicap at 2.00 decimal odds. Punter's pot is 80% in favour of ManUtd beating the 1-ball handicap but down from 85% a day ago. Looks like there is a shift in the wagers but not that I would be too concerned about since we are still in the 80% mark.

Sunderland has never beaten ManUtd in the last 13 meetings and I doubt it will happen today. Roy Keane is no longer around and Sunderland if you ask me, is doomed to relegation zone after today.

Take ManUtd and give the 1-ball.

Manchester United vs Porto

This match is one hell of a cracker. By the end of the game, there is no fingernails for me to bite. I would say this game had so much entertainment value that whoever on a pacemaker, the pacemaker will stop working. This game is so "you score one goal, i score two back" kind of mentality.

But the question on everyone's lips right now is, "Who is Federico Macheda?"

He is signed from Lazio in 2007 and currently played in the Man Utd Reserves. Because of injuries and suspension, Fergie have no choice but to put him on the bench. The bench was all from Reserves except for Ben Foster and Park Ji-sung. He is nicknamed "Kiko" and after i saw him in the post match commentary, he is going to be the new poster boy for all the girls who support Man Utd.

2 days rest and we have to face Porto for the Champions League match. Porto is very different since the days of Jose Mourinho. Look like easy win for us since Rooney, Scholes and Vidic is back from suspension. A semi-final date with Arsenal or Villarreal prehaps?

Man Utd Team News: Rooney, Scholes and Vidic will be back from suspension. Rio Ferdinand and Berbatov are out with injuries. John O'Shea is expected to partner Vidic.

Porto Team News: Full team to choose from.

Odds and analysis: Man Utd is giving 1 ball. Currently still unbeaten in the competition, and with the trio back from suspension, take Man Utd for the win.

We really lost the plot in the run-in and a slew of red card from out of the blue just sent us into an uncontrollable tailspin.

What happened?

Perhaps the end-season jinx was set upon us earlier than normal?

For the uninitated, ManUtd has this little jinx that whenever we approach the end of the season, especially coming in the last 4 games of the season, we were bound to stumble spectacularly to send loads of people into the hospital with heart attacks.

An embarrassing defeat on our own soil by rival Liverpool who wiped the floor with us and then the shock defeat by minnows Fulham.

We really need to snap out of this now and especially when we are playing the ECL Quarter-Finals this coming mid-week. Fortunately, we were given an easy draw against Porto but given our curent form, we aren't going to beat anybody.

Expect those who are currently serving domestic suspensions due to red cards to feature in mid-week clash against Porto.

JayWalk The Talk: We have a huge list of injuries to worry. Berbatov, Hargreaves, Rafael, Ferdinand and Anderson are out. To take a Chinese idiom, "to add frost to snow" is when we have Vidic, Scholes and Rooney serving their suspensions.

Expect new faces to feature in Sunday's game. Ronaldo-Tevez partnership?

JayWalk The Walk: Bookies are making ManUtd give a 1.25-ball handicap and 2.10 decimal odds to beat it. Do the bookies already know that it is going to be a victory for the Red Devils?

It is hard to figure this one out considering the recent form of ManUtd against a team who is chasing the last ECL spot. Then again, Aston Villa also lost their last 2 games as well.

I say we will still win this game although I am not very sure if they can clear the handicap. Still, given that results have more often than not, surprised us, I am going to take the leap of faith and punt a 2-0 victory for ManUtd.
