Weekend Review - 31 Jan 2010

Arsenal vs Manchester United

"I didnt expect the aggregrate score to be 4-3!!"
-Gary, 31 Jan 2010

It seems so surreal when Rooney head in the goal that send Man Utd to the Carling Cup final to face Aston Villa. The scene is just like what Owen's injury strike in the last meeting. I didnt expect the aggregrate score to be 4-3!!

With the transfer market closing 31 Jan, I dont think there will be any last minute big signing from any Premier League clubs. I think we are more interested in the development on Portsmouth's financial issue, Liverpool's worst run in the current season and other news that runs the course of the season.

Sunday's game at the Emirates is more of cementing 2nd place in the league rather than getting top spot as Chelsea have a game in hand and will be playing earlier on Saturday. We are seeing familiar names in the top 4 standings except Liverpool which is 5th at the moment. Man City, Tottenham and Aston Villa are eyeing for the last spot in the Champions League place.

Arsenal Team News: Eduardo, Thomas Vermaelen, Fran Merida, Abou Diaby, Kieran Gibbs, Robin van Persie and Johan Djourou are out.

Man Utd Team News: Nemanja Vidic, Owen Hargreaves and John O'shea are out. Rio Ferdinand is suspended.

Odds and Analysis: Level ball handicap. Take Man Utd.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (30 Jan 10)

Birmingham City FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

The real threat to our quest for fourth position is none other than Manchester City. With 2 games in hand, they could potentially leapfrog us with an extra 3 points should they win both.

Spurs would be meeting the Blues at their own turf in Birmingham City. The last time both sides met at White Hart Lane, our boys fought all the way till injury time to grab the winning goal. Recently, Birmingham had a very good run and is now sitting pretty at 8th position, and 8 points behind us.

Yes, the hype of having Gudjohnsen on loan to our side would boost our striking capability, and so is the return of Kaboul and goalie Bergovic from Pompey (the latter supposedly to replace injured Cudicini). Gudjohnsen for sure would not be going up to the West Midlands, though.

As mentioned earlier, Birmingham had an unbeaten 15-game run before meeting their defeat with Chelsea in the last round of the EPL a few days ago. Whether this would be just a glitch in their run or the "beginning of the end" would depend very much on their stand in their home ground.

Ironically, Birmingham is interested in signing the sidelined striker Pavlyuchenko, though details at this moment remain sketchy.

Yes, it is pressurizing to maintain at fourth, but through these we hope to become a better and fitter team, both physically and mentally.

Midweek Review - 27 Jan 2010

Manchester United vs Manchester City

"Tonight's derby cup game is nothing short of fireworks in the making."
-Gary, 27 Jan 2010

The scoreline should reads, "Rooney 4 - 0 Hull". And Man Utd have chances to increase their scoreline, had not been wonderful goalkeeping by Boaz Myhill and woeful finishing by, who else but Owen.

Man Utd have finally entered the transfer market to buy an unknown defender of Chris Smalling from Fulham. But he will only don the red jersey at the start of next season. One known fact about him is that he ply his trade in the non-league football 2 years ago. That's a big rise and observers will monitor him the rest of current season with Fulham. Rumors have been going on overdrive that Smalling could be a replacement for wantaway Nemanja Vidic. This will be the first time English central defenders will be playing next season since the days of Gary Pallister and Steve Bruce.

Tonight's derby cup game is nothing short of fireworks in the making. I believe this is the most hostile derby in the most recent years as Man City is taken over by a bottomless pit of wealth by the Arabian owners and trying to snatch the spotlight back from Man Utd. Another 4-3 scoreline? Perhaps Man City could be playing right from the script and book a ticket in the Wembley Stadium to face Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final.

Man Utd Team News: Nemanja Vidic, John O'shea and Owen Hargreaves are out.

Man City Team News: Emmanuel Adebayor could be back. Roque Santa Cruz, Joleon Lescott, Michael Johnson and Wayne Bridge are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 0.75 handicap. No bet for me. Man City to qualify for the final.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Results - Games 23 - 26 Jan 2010 EPL Prediction League 2009/2010

OH SO CLOSE!!

ihawk98, KingMeng and I almost got that elusive Perfect-10! ihawk98 and I were the closest as we were a mere goal shy of scoring all 10 points.

Still, 9 points is a good haul and we see ihawk98 jump to the top of the Marksmen Board to co-lead with Delay.

For myself, although I did not make any progress up the table but at the very least I managed to close up the gap to be within strike zone of the leader.

To the next weekend!

Fixture Focus – Spurs (27 January 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Fulham

It will be exactly a month ago that Spurs went to Craven Cottage and drew 0 – 0 with Fulham thanks to some heroic goalkeeping from Gomes.  So this tie is no walk in the park for us.

Fulham will clearly not be at full strength with injuries to several key players.  But Bobby Zamora looks to have recovered from his injury and should be starting.  Clinton Demsey, Paul Konchesky and John Pantsil are out so I am hoping that Spurs will be able to penetrate the defense a little easier.

That said, we are a very different team without the pace of Aaron Lennon.  In the past few matches, we have shown a lack of width.  Lennon tends to run along the edge of the field which draws at least one or two players along with him.  This makes space for the strikers to get into position in the goal area.  However, Modric and Kranjcar tends to want to bring the ball inside and hence the edge of the penalty area gets very crowded.  So ‘arry has to figure out how to break the opponent down.  Perhaps we should let Giovani Dos Santos have a crack at playing winger?

If you are looking for an omen, apparently Spurs have never lost to Fulham whenever they play on the 26th of any month (UK dates of course).  We have met 8 times so far and have won 4 and drawn 4.  But in order to get back on track, we really need 3 points from this match.

Weekend Review - 23 Jan 2010

Manchester United vs Hull City

"...we rather lose to other unfancied teams rather than the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City."
-Gary, 23 Jan 2010

Ok, so Man City won us for the first time since Sven Goran Eriksson was a coach in 07/08. And this win could also help Man City appear in the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa for the first time since 1981.

This Cup not really our top priority, and we could really forgo this one. But then again, we rather lose to other unfancied teams rather than the likes of Leeds United and Manchester City. Let see what Fergie name his team when the teams face again the coming week.

Hull City match is the only match that is playing over the weekend due to FA Cup, we really think that this match could help us leapfrog Chelsea and Arsenal for at least 72 hours.

Man Utd Team News: Rio Ferdinand will be back. John O'Shea's season is over as he has a blood clot problem. Owen Hargreaves is still out.

Hull City Team News: Jimmy Bullard, Amr Zaki and Ian Ashbee are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 2.25 handicap. You lose half if Man Utd win by 2 clear goals. And you win if Man Utd win 3 clear goals. Last season they met in Old Trafford, Man Utd won 4-3. I think they will do better this time, but wont clear the handicap. No punt.

Fixture Focus – FA Cup 4th Round (23 January 2010)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Leeds United

Spurs will need to recover from their horrible hangover of a game in midweek where they were outplayed at Anfield.

Leeds reached this point after dispatching Manchester United in the previous round.  And the goal scorer Jermaine (not Defoe but Beckford) is the dangerman who will be licking his chops and try to unravel the Spurs back four.  Bassong will probably have the task of keeping close to Beckford.

After the strange team line up used by ‘arry at Anfield on Wednesday, one can only wonder who will be in the starting 11 this Saturday.  Would he throw in the likes of Danny Rose, Giovanni, and Keane from the start?  Is Lennon available as a substitute?

The concern is that lesser teams like Stoke, Hull and Wolves have shown how to beat Spurs by parking 10 players behind the ball and crowding the midfield with 5 players.  This has been effective in disrupting the flowing football Spurs likes to play.  And without Lennon, we have displayed a severe lack of width in the middle of the field.

Historically, Leeds and Spurs have met 3 times in the FA Cup at White Hart Lane and Spurs have been victorious in each tie.  Spurs has also not let in a goal at home for 447 minutes.  I am thinking that this will be a hard fought tie and tip Spurs to come out just ahead.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (20 Jan 10)

Liverpool FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

The postponed game from 10 Jan 10 will be played on Wednesday (or early Thursday morning our time), 20 Jan 10.

After a lacklustre performance against Hull City over the weekend, Spurs would be seeking renewed strength in this important fixture against the Red Merseysiders.

Why important, one might ask.

Easy, just take a look at the league table.

Fortunately for us, the blue half of Manchester has lost points for the weekend game, and so do Aston Villa who drew. Pool, also, lost 2 points over the weekend when Stoke stole the victory from them. However, these teams are still chasing behind us, with only goal difference separating us and Manchester City.

A win would be a big boost, in terms of points and morale, and to do it at Anfield, it is not a far-fetched dream.

Liverpool's Torres, Gerrard and Benayoun would be out of this game, and there goes the threat to our goal. Babel would be making a return to the squad, and we may see the likes of new signing Rodriguez coming on against us.

As for our visiting squad, Huddlestone is out, and O'Hara will be returning from his Pompey loan spell, prompting a possible bench start.

This would be a pivotable moment for Spurs, and this could very well be the game that could silence Pool's return to the top 4.

Midweek Review - 20 Jan 2010

Manchester City vs Manchester United

"Hopefully his presence(Diouf) will make other strikers like Owen and Berbatov to work hard for the starting line up."
-Gary, 20 Jan 2010

Last season against Aston Villa, a star is born and his name is Fedrico Macheda. Now another star is in the making and his name is Diouf. Not that salivia-spitting Diouf. It's Mame Biram Diouf.

Hopefully his presence will make other strikers like Owen and Berbatov to work hard for the starting line up.

Tonight match against Man City is another match that was postponed last week due to adverse weather conditions. Had this match been played earlier, Man City record still stands at 100% since the appointment of Roberto Mancini. But this record had been broken over the weekend where they lose 2-0 to Everton. Hopefully we can continue to do one over our neighbours.

Man City Team News: Roque Santa Cruz, Patrick Viera are out for the match.

Man Utd Team News: Fergie will rotate his squad and give his fringe team players match fitness. Perhaps handing a debut to Diouf in the League Cup.

Odds and Analysis: The match is level. No handicap. No punt for me as i think the match could end in a draw either.

EPL37: SAT 23/1 Manchester United vs Hull at 10:55pm SIN/HKT

First and foremost, congratulations to KingMeng who got married yesterday!

And possibly why he missed this week's predictions (My fault also to forget to remind him).

Anyway, well done Delay for the Perfect 10. That's a 5-place jump to 4th and an outright lead on the Marksmen Board.

Kudos also to hotdog who takes over the lead at the top with his 8-point haul.

Weekend Review - 16 Jan 2010

Manchester United vs Burnley

"But Burnley's record in their travels are bad either"
-Gary, 16 Jan 2010

With only 2 matches played last weekend including Man Utd match, Man Utd couldnt not capitalised to overtake Chelsea by drawing Birmingham. That's bad.

Burnley have a change of manager and it's none other than Brian Laws. Not much of information about him at the moment. But Burnley's record in their travels are bad either.

Man Utd Team News: Dimitar Berbatov, Ben Foster, Fedrico Macheda, Nemanja Vidic, Nani, Edwin van der Sar, John O'Shea, Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves are out.

Burnley Team News: Clarke Carlisle, Steven Caldwell, Martin Paterson, Jay Rodriguez and Chris McCann are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 2 balls. Take Man Utd as they want to avenge the defeat to Burnley earlier in the season.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (16 Jan 10)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Hull City

With Manchester City played their game in hand and overtook us in the league table, plus the postponed Anfield fixture coming just days away, Spurs would have a tough time ahead.

Tax problems aside, Redknapp knew that the pressure to reach the top 4 has to be maintained.

Hull City, on the other hand, is now fighting to maintain their Premier League status. When playing a desperate team like them, we should be wary, very wary.

Spurs would be without Ekotto, but Lennon may be joining the squad. Besides them, almost every regular first-teamer are ready and available.

Keep up the good work, boys, and COYS! And oh yeah, keep those clean sheets coming!

Weekend Review - 9 Jan 2010

Birmingham City vs Manchester United

"This match is where form book, standings, everything is thrown out of the window."
-Gary, 9 Jan 2010

Look like we started the year quite badly that we lost to our fiercest rivals. This match is where form book, standings, everything is thrown out of the window.

This is indeed the shock and giant-killing teams where we could only see it in FA Cup.

But then again, what was Fergie thinking when he field 4 forwards in the starting line-up? Rooney, Berbatov, Welbeck and Obertan? One thing for sure, he underestimated Leeds United. Anyway, all the best to Leeds United where they can progress beyond 4th round, hopefully.

Midweek will be another cup game, another derby rivals, but different manager. Mark Hughes have a wealth of talent but doesnt know how to fully utilitise them. It doesnt help either when the star team that he wanted to see on the field didnt materalise as majority of them are in the treatment room. Mark Hughes get the sack and in came Roberto Mancini.

And so far, he have guided Man City to a perfect start in the Premier League and progress to the 4th round of FA Cup. Let see whether by the end of the season, he could guide Man City to the promised land of European Cup next season.
Game is postpone and will proceed to Birmingham game this weekend. Since the takeover by Carson Yeung, Birmingham have been doing well on the field. They are currently unbeaten in 12 games including the latest FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest where they held to a 0-0 draw. If the unbeaten run continue, Birmingham could be eyeing for an Europa League spot next season.

Man City Team News: Roque Santa Cruz, Stephen Ireland, Shaun Wright Phillips, Joleon Lescott, Nedum Onuoha, Michael Johnson and Wayne Bridge are out.
Birmingham Team News: Teemu Tainio, Garry O'Connor and David Murphy are out.

Man Utd Team News: Edwin van der Sar, Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, John O' Shea are out.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is eating 0.25. No punt for me. Man Utd is giving 1 ball. I doubt Man Utd will clear it with Birmingham on an unbeaten run. I rather take Birmingham eating 1 ball.

Weekend Review - 3 Jan 2010

Manchester United vs Leeds United

"This is one rivalry that we have missed over the years."
- Gary, 3 Jan 2010

We ended the year with a win and close the gap to within 2 points.

And we usher in the new year with the visit of our fiercest rivals for the FA Cup 3rd round - Leeds United.

I have to echo with Fergie that this is one rivalry that we have missed over the years since they drop out of Premier League.

Leeds United have the chance to promote to Championship last season. They did well in League 1 but falter at the end of the season where they lose the Play-off Semi-Final against Millwall.

Leeds United have done well under the guidance of Simon Grayson. On 26 Dec 2009, he celebrated his one year anniversary with Leeds United. In 46 games that he has been in charge, Leeds accumlated 102 points and score 99 goals. I believe they will promote to Championship this time round.

Man Utd Team News: Edwin van der Sar, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nani, Gary Neville, John O'Shea, Jonny Evans, Fedrico Macheda and Owen Hargreaves are out.

Leeds United Team News: A full team to choose from.

Odds and Analysis: Man Utd is giving 1.75 handicap. Too much for Man Utd to clear the handicap. No punt for me.

Disclaimer: This review is entirely on my own views and opinion. I didn’t point a gun at you to ask you to follow. If you want to bet on this game, do so at your own risk. Pls bet within limits. Good luck.

Fixture Focus - Spurs (2 Jan 10)

Tottenham Hotspur vs Peterborough United FC
(FA Cup 3rd Round)

Another chance of a silverware for Spurs in their first football game of the new year. The Lilywhites will host Peterborough, who had just promoted to the Coca Cola Championship this season.

A bit on our opponents - Peterborough had proven to be the rising star among the English teams for the past few seasons, gaining back-to-back promotions (2007/2008 - from League Two to League One, and 2008/2009 - from League One to Championship) within 2 years, though now they are languishing at the bottom of that table.

It may look like a walk in the park for Redknapp's boys, but we have to be wary of Championship teams (and ex-ones as well). After all, we were floored by Wolves, Stoke and Hull City these 2 seasons.

Spurs will be without Lennon and Ekotto. Players who had been on the bench for a while (Pavlyuchenko, Keane, Bale, etc.) may be out to shine themselves.

COYS!!!!!
